http://www.thaitravelnews.net/bangkok-2/thai-travel-news-bangkok-flood-update-tourists-%E2%80%93-october-23-2011/ Current Situation: The current situation as we perceive it is that parts of the city have/will become affected to flooding over the coming days. At the present point in time, we believe that there is minimal risk to the tourist areas around the city. The government reports that some of the canals may fill and overflow in parts of the city as a controlled effort in draining floodwaters from northern runoff. The TAT and other authorities have stated that the most areas of central Bangkok frequented by tourists will not become flooded and remain fully accessible. In some cases, roadways and paths situated near the river may become flooded due to high waters of Chao Phraya. At this stage, flooding has occurred in the northern suburbs, particularly in the neighbouring province of Nonthaburi and in the north of Bangkok at Don Mueang. Some flooding has been recorded closer to the city along Samsen Road in Bangkok’s inner north as a result of a breach in a temporary floodwall. During periods of intensely heavy rain, there is some localized flooding of certain low-lying streets in Bangkok. These conditions are quickly cleared up by municipal work crews and the city’s storm water drainage system. Day trips and short trips to tourist attractions close to Bangkok, such as Pattaya, Hua-Hin, Damnoen Saduak Floating Marketing in Ratchaburi, and Amphawa Floating Market in Samut Songkhram remain unaffected by the floods and open to visitors. Tourists who would like to visit historical attractions can consider Sukhothai Historical Park in Sukhothai. We advise that this warning is for the city of Bangkok only. There is no flooding affecting Phuket, Krabi, Koh Samui, Hua Hin or Pattaya. Chiang Mai was affected last month, but floodwaters have subsided and all businesses and tourist attractions are operating normally. ................... What will happen? To put it quite frankly, we don’t know. Different people are saying different things, including the experts. At this stage, there are too many factors that need to be taken into account for how the situation will resolve. ................. Booked a trip to Bangkok? Thai Travel News remains confident that much of the tourist attractions will remain open during the foreseeable future. Living in the city, many Bangkokians are going about their ordinary lives, shopping, going out for dinner, etc. Businesses are still open and the MRT underground system and BTS Skytrain are all open. We suggest the following – Thai Travel News holds the opinion that Bangkok is safe, but safety is always an subjective concept. What’s safe for some is not for others, and therefore we have devised some options available for travellers who have tickets booked for Bangkok over the next week. a) If you are fearful or anxious of the flooding situation AND you face losing a significant amount of money by cancelling or postponing your trip, go anyway. As mentioned, businesses and tourist attractions are still open in Bangkok. For those in this situation who do not want to stay in Bangkok, a direct bus is available from many places in Bangkok and also at Suvarnabhumi Airport. Travellers can also depart to other centres after arriving from their international flights. Other centres around Thailand remain unaffected by flooding, such as Phuket, Krabi and Koh Samui. Vietnam is also easily reached by a number of carriers that operate from Suvarnabhumi Airport. Tickets to Ho Chi Minh City sell for around US$70, but a Vietnamese visa is required for most nationalities. ......................... When in the phra khanong area this afternoon I noticed some stands selling bottled water at inflated price. Some clearly have made huge stocks and now that there is no more water avalaible in the supermarkets since a few days they make money. One business I know in sukhumvit had no other choice but to take a pickup and go to Chonburi to go buy some some bottled water for their customers...yes they did buy a full pickup of water, and as soon as they arrived and started to unload some people tried to buy the water from them!

"Elsewhere, Thailand’s neighbor Cambodia was struggling with its most severe floods in a decade, affecting about a tenth of the population and taking the lives of more than 200 people. The tourist town of Siem Reap, adjacent to the ancient temples of Angkor, has been repeatedly inundated since August. Tourism has fallen sharply, shops and restaurants have been forced to close, and some hotels have had to use pumps to keep out water. In the midst of its troubles, Cambodia, whose army has confronted Thailand in recent months in a border dispute, donated $50,000 to Thailand, and provided a similar amount to Vietnam, to help in their disaster relief efforts. BK, you sure ? From the NYT link quoted above : In the Philippines, where two successive typhoons took the lives of more than 100 people and left behind large-scale flooding, mudslides were reported to have severely damaged 2,000-year-old rice terraces in Ifugao province. The operations center reported that, while water levels in provinces north of Bangkok had ceased to rise and were even beginning to decline, massive waves of additional runoff were bearing down on the capital as they flowed south toward the Gulf of Thailand.

http://www.skynews.com.au/world/article.aspx?id=677767&vId=2801779&cId=World Bangkok has so far avoided major flooding but the river and most drainage canals are at full capacity. The Chao Phraya River in the heart of old Bangkok was not flooding on Tuesday morning, witnesses near the Grand Palace said. The river express boat service that transports thousands of commuters every day was cancelled as of Monday until at least November 7, notices on the piers said. Further north, Chang Wattana Road that flooded over the weekend was dry Tuesday after a dyke was repaired, local media reported. Traffic moved at a snail's pace, because parked cars blocked overpasses, leaving only one narrow lane for vehicles to move. Elevated parts of roads have turned into parking lots the past week in the capital as car parks filled up and residents wanted safe locations for their vehicles. On Monday, the prime minister praised the Bangkok city government's drainage system and rare bipartisan co-operation in efforts to address severe flooding. Premier Yingluck Shinawatra visited a pumping station with city Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra and other politicians, and urged officials to work with the military in their efforts to direct floodwaters out to sea. City Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra said on Monday he did not believe that all 50 of Bangkok's districts would flood, but the canal system was working at maximum capacity already, the government-run Thai News Agency reported. 'All drainage systems have been used at their full capacity. If it rains, water, drainage will be doubly slow,' the agency quoted him as saying. Sukhumbhand said people in low-lying areas of the capital should be prepared to evacuate.
