Not talking for more than 24 hours yes. Even 2 or 3 days -when alone at home without going out. 1 week never.
But I always watched Tv or something. So it was not silence. But silence as not hearing any human voice? No. I do not think I have ever come close to 24 hours.
That is why I am curious about that place. i may give it a try one day.
Have you done the silence thing for a long period? What else can you tell us?

No, I don't mean experiencing silence... There will always be a sound or noise around you. But being silent. Nope, I have not had the opprotunity to do that for a long time due to the nature of my work, but I managed one full day. No phone calls, etc.
I can't tell you much, as I only tried it out for one day...I did feel at peace with everything around me.

I know somewhere you can sit in a coffin-like apparatus floating on water in both silence and complete disorientation for 2-12 hours. Apparently the disorientation factor makes the time seem much longer.

Tried the isolation tank thing a few times in the 80s. Ok for a quick silly kick once in a while but not so mystical as marketeers will want us to believe.
Substance abuse? The THAIS as a whole group? hmmm... I do not know about the ones you hang with ... but maybe should you think twice before assuming that all are like the ones you hang out with. When it comes to substance abuse, as far as statistics go, the greatest country on earth USA still beats most places when looking at consumption on a per capita basis.

May be it because Thai's are happy with what they have rather than desiring what they want. Happiness is enjoying what you have, your family, your life etc. Enjoy each day as it comes, strive for excellance but don't let it be the be all and and all.
Life can so easily be cut short so be happy while you can.

And yes Smeg, generalizing is always dangerous.
BUT maybe "happy with waht you have" could also mean "ignorance is bliss"... so Smeg has something there with the USA figure.
Still..I spent 4 days with "happy" people on a farm in Isaan and they drank Thai rice whiskey for breakfast....substance abuse?????
