You can vaporise a building of steel and concrete and an airliner

Come on...vaporize??? Was that a mountain of 'vapor' that hundreds of bulldozers and dump trucks working 24/7 for a year, carted away, including tons of papers?

BTW, the President 'won' the election on the basis of electoral votes, not on judges ruling - which only sorted out hotly contested legal issues. But had Gore been proclaimed winner, then someone could just as easily today say that "...the President won the election on a judges ruling".

So...?

You're absolutely right in implying that Americans, as should all, take a more pro-active part in government, and while this member believes that that system needs a lot of fixin', how many systems, overall, work better? (Before recounting all the things that need to be fixed, the key word is 'overall').

Apologies for threadf***ing, but as noted in another thread, stuff like this goes better with a few beers, learning from the opinions of worldwide brothers as good drinking buddies.

Repeat Offender
Everytime there is an unexpected event, such as that of 9/11, conspiracy theories are generated in order to assuage the uncomforable idea that life is risky.
I agree with Mr CC that to expect "the authorities" to protect us from unprecedented and unanticipated events is to ask too much. The level of skill and daring of many terrorist activites is exaggerated so that we can tell ourselves that such events are exceptional, rather than banal. There is no need to invoke the notion a sophisticated global network or the necessity of a 'mastermind' such as Bin Laden in order to explain the the events of 9/11.
Terrorism is easy, and can be carried out on a shoe-string budget, and so is here to stay.

In keeping with the topic of the thread and combining some of the various conspiracy theories I submit the following for ridicule and insults as may be considered suitable.....

The British secret service is pre-testing a new anti-terrorist air passenger protection system.

By placing a 'Drunken Brit', preferable of Middle Eastern heritage ( or there abouts--makeup provided if necessary), on each overseas flight, who in effect goes beserk at the slightest hint of a hi-jack, it is felt that teorrists, themselves terrorized, would for all practical purposes, turn themselves in (to flight attendants).

The theory being that the likelihood of 9/11 ever happening in the first place had 'Druken Brits' been already in place, would have been, unlikely.

Applications for professional 'Druken Brits' are currently being handed out at pubs throughout England.

But not Scotland. The thought being that a 'Drunken Scot' is far to terrifying for children and senior citizens.

Part of the training is viewing fuzzy, out of focus pictures of Osama Bin Laden. The out of focus pictures of course simulating the drunken vision of the agents.

Applications are still available to the right sort of drunkerd.

When Mr Khan revealed his service to the Queen, his wife of course forgave him. The rugby player was jailed for interrupting an officer of the crown, conducting his sworn duties.

VJ:

Good insight, i.e. that riots of '68 would never have happened with King around.

But is all the rest meant as fiction or wry humor? You really don't believe all that stuff, do you? Esp. the 'hijack conspiracy'? Wow!

The '68 riots more or less killed the civil rights movement in my view. They caused a reactionary schism to form among "reachable" whites, some sort of groupthink kicked in along the lines of "see, I told you them nigras couldn't be trusted." Sorry for the language, but neccessary to get the point accross with an economy of words.

Re: 9/11, HLobo makes the neccessary point regarding radars. The first plane hits a building after switching off its transponder, then another plane hits a building after switching off its transponder.

Having just seen this and knowing that two other planes had also switched off their transponders, what would you conclude would be the intended fate of those last two planes?

Would you make a leap and assume that someone intended to ram them into buildings? I would.

Having made that assumption, couldn't you do better than scramble a measly handful of unarmed fighters? Couldn't you actually send up a second wave, armed, and direct them at least to the last known co-ordinates of the missing planes?

Do the math ( [Airforce Bases + Naval Bases + Air National Guard Bases] * pilots on duty) and you'll find that you you could very quickly have several hundred armed fighters in the sky in the North-East corridor of the US. Even a slow-poke old fighter covers 10 a minute.

And you need not take the time to arm them fully -- it takes longer than you think -- a Sidewinder apiece would be enough plus ammo for one gun would be plenty.

But this didn't happen. I've studied the very vague testimony that Gen. Eberhardt gave to Congress about the timing of things and no one asked the tough questions about how many planes were on the ground and how many pilots were available to fly them. That alone smacks of willful ignorance in the Senate.

I also understand military thinking and how reluctant some senior officers would be to scramble EVERYTHING on their own initiative. That is what you get with an officer corps full of careerists promoted on whatever the opposite of merit is these days. CYA is SOP.

But some of those officers would have that sort of initiative and would act on it UNLESS there was control from a higher level: control of the information flow primarily.

But the very half-hearted response to those missing planes is such a red flag that it can't be ignored. When golfer Payne Stewart's small private plane went off course, it was located from within 15 minutes of the time the flight went bad and tracked continuously throgh a handful of Air National Guard areas of responsibility until it crashed in the upper heartland. And that was on a normal day.

Finding planes that go off course is and has been a very serious priority for the Air Force and ANG for decades. And even if NORAD's radar network wasn't up to it (the "looking outward" dodge) there are very, very few areas of the US that are not covered by one FAA radar or another, and there is no place to sneak through the net in the northeast. All it would have taken is for one radar operator to report that a plane with no transponder went across his scope.

I don't mind the handle "conspiracy theorist" -- not when the alternative is an ostrich-like denial of jarring inconsistancies. For what it's worth, I think Oswald and Ruby both acted alone, James Earl Ray was a gutless f*ck, and UFOs are pretty much bullsh*t.

But this 9/11 thing boils down to one of two things: either the most odious simultaneous malfeasance of public office by several dozen individuals, such as never has been seen before in human history, or it was a set piece.

Some smarter fellas than me think that society and government is founded on the notion of risk management - through government (and the activities that governments make possible) the distribution of catastrophic individual risk is tranformed into incendental collective risk. But they could be wrong and those guys are always saying stupid sh*t like that, I don't know why they got them there Nobel prizes.

Mr Fastmover-

It is my observation that there
are drunken 'Brits' everywhere.
Seems to be their 'National pastime'
along with public vomiting.

It is unfortunate when something doesn't add up too many people shout conspiracy. The facts (or lack of them) should speak for themselves. The Americans I know (not Michael Moore) can see this and actually are now asking more profound questions about their democracy and their rights. The perception on this board is that most Americans are reactionary and believe in everything their President says or does and everybody else is a whimp and a liberal (lefty). This may or may not be true on this forum but in reality and again just going on the meetings I have had with Americans, they have been concerned about the system ever since the President won the election on a judges ruling. Where indeed will 'our' country be in five to ten years from now ? I will add that they usually look past and through the simple Democrat vs. Republican argument and to what is actually happening to 'their' country.

Mr Herman the German-
You haven't a clue have you?
The 'system' is working for you
not against you. Just enjoy.
You don't live in a 'Banana Republic'
like the rest of the World. It's that
system that gives you your freedom
and protection. It is actually under
assault daily. There are many unknown
heroes defending it so you may have a
normal life.
