Hzink says,
Well, for anyone who even knows a little bit about the avian flu, there's not much of a stunt involved. The chicken, once grilled/cooked or prepared, is safe to eat. The virus does not survive the heat. You can only get it from direct contact with an infected chicken carcas, and so far the flu has not progressed to human/human diffusion.

In summary - seems like it's pretty damn safe to go. Furthermore, as in previous cases, the avian flu appears to only be lethal to the very young, or the very old (similar to SARS in that respect), so, again, most of us have nothing to fear.

My reply:
Scientists are worried however that whilst preparing raw chicken meat the virus can be passed onto humans. Particularly through poor hygiene and unsafe cooking methods. Some strains of avian influenza have been known to mutate into thermophiles (heat resistant). This is one of the main reasons why several countries have banned Thai meat. There must be a risk (no matter how small) for the WHO to suggest such drastic measures.

Hzink says:
The way I see it is that if this becomes more acute in the next two weeks, coupled with the beginning of low season, and I might end up with a cheap vacation again, and prices dropping (or becoming 'very negotiable').

My reply:
This did not happen last year following the SARS crisis. All that seemed to do was make the bars, hotels, girls and mps charge normal prices to the fewer tourists that were there to make up the previous shortfall in revenue. Incidentally the avian flu has now spread to Indonesia which is reporting massive outbreaks. In the UK we thought mad cow disease would blow over and it lasted for 9 months. It all depends on how quick the thai gov is in containing things. Considering the thai govt may have known about this since as early as the end of last year who knows what to believe as to how big the problem is or will be.

Hzink says:
Same with early closing times (not that they will affect me mid-february), as this simply means I don't have to wait until 2:00am to pick up company

My reply:
Whichever way you look at it Hzink, this will not be good for tourism or the freedom of the thai people as it should not be up to governments to decide that midnight or 1am is the time they should stop enjoying themselves.

youve said it yourself it doesnt matter what the truth of the matter is its what the press say and how public opion reacts to it

Of course, this won't stop the media from spreading Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt (or Hermie from making some George W/Alien connection of it all).

now public opion in the uk is that thailand is a place you go for cheap sex with young asain girls or a place to go where cheap drugs and a great place to party

now on top of that thailand has a bird flu epedemic with offical cover ups and lame attempts to reassure the public

now do I want to got to a place like that for a holiday if I never been there before?

the answer would be no

as to cheaper prices dream on as the thais will stick with bussiness as usual for months prices will stay the same until finally they get the message but dont discount the idea that less people means increase the prices to recover the lost money even though its finacial suicide

as to the bar closing situation it looks like some common sence has broken out as the goverment have shifted the decision to a commitee instead of a particular mp's making a name fore themselves for promotting the early closing

my predition

if the thai goverment is anything like any other democratic like goverment the decision will ly in commitee for a few months and either just fade away or the report will be let sleeping dogs lie

the Thai Government have not decided on the early closing times.
it is a proposal and has yet to be voted on in Parliament.
it will be decided by elected Members from all Parties as is the norm in a lot of Countries.
this decision has not been railroaded through against the wishes of Thais.........yet.

visitors may complain about having 1-2 Hours less drinking time, but remember we are visitors to Thailand and must abide by their Laws.
we may not like them but we are have no say in how they run their Country.
1-2 Hours less drinking would not bother me too much, more time in the bedroom is better I think.

Ive heard the "more time in the bedroom" argument before and Im also fully aware that as 'tourists' we have no say on what a country decides. However, I still stand by my original comments that whichever way you look at it earlier closing times will have an impact o tourism and as an 'outsider' looking in I see it as wrong if the thai govt decides to put a lid on thai peoples enjoyment at midnight or 1am.

Back to the chicken flu! and as for this fowl cackle fastmover..isnt this what this forum is about?

Why does every misfortune have to result in 'more negotiable' prices? Seems a bit er...mean.

Power 24: "Whichever way you look at it Hzink, this will not be good for tourism or the freedom of the thai people as it should not be up to governments to decide that midnight or 1am is the time they should stop enjoying themselves."

There are government ordered closing times in many countries, including Europe and the US, between midnight and 4am. SO, there too the government directs when bars have to close. Doesn't seem to bother anyone.

Currently, the bar closing time is set to 2:00am. Seems to work just fine. Aside from the fact that it's up to the Thais to decide what works for them (not a small minority of tourist venues), it seems that measure will go away anyways - even if it were to go to midnight, it certainly won't affect me. If they decided to go insane and cut it down to 10:00pm, then you WOULKD be talking about a large economic impact (domino effect)

JHolmesJr: Not mean, just the way things work..

Power24: During the SARS crisis I was able to negotiate very nice hotel prices, was offered very low BG prices, and in general saw very low prices everywhere. I know about the anecdotal evidence of prices staying and being jacked - I dont drink beer or alcohol in bars, so that doesn't affect me. Ice tea was the same price.

JackRabbit present...

OK, but can we stay on the chicken flu.

BBC Yesterday: Troops & amount of prisoners are assigned to kill the chickens, so it seems that the infected farms are cleaned pretty fast.

Fresh info, anybody ?

79 baht buffet at KFC in Big C Pattaya. All you can eat!

Does that tell you something JR? I was at a shopping center in Chonburi last night. KFC was empty. If the Thai people are scared of the chicken, you better believe we should be. Look at the stuff they eat from the street vendors compared to chicken from KFC.

It tells you nothing other than that Thais are easily stampeded by the hysterics of the media.

Not all chickens are created equal. Those that are sourced from a large commercial processor to a huge institutional customer like KFC are not the same as the dozen birds Somchai drags to the village market every morning.
