Cheapcharlie,

The Thai attitude to life is that life goes on after something like this (by the way, I live here and was at the beach when it happened). Their reaction to something like this is to carry on and keep smiling, not mope around with long faces crying "why us?".

I have seen countless Thai people enjoying themselves at all times of the day since the tragedy and yes, there are three days of official "mourning" for those lives lost as well as the life of the King's grandson (who was not a child).

As for the "ban" on alcohol - I am going out tonight for a work party and there will be plenty of alcohol available and drunk by several Thai people. There is no law that says it is forbidden but I suspect it is a polite request for Thai people only not to partake as much as they normally do in public for the next three days. As far as farangs drinking in places like Patong, well, I'd like to see them try to stop that!

Once again,
(1) don't believe everything you hear
(2) take everything you hear with a good dose of salt
(3) listen to the forum brothers who are actually here before pontificating on what is happening here.

cheers,
Whisper

Whisper,

I thought I was listening to the brothers living there, thats how this thread started. Basically im just philosifying so that someone reacts
like you just did and give the real picture. Of course
giving some info of reactions in farangland for you guys there.

Dont worry I understand the Thai attitude to life - I am married to one this is a buddah thing.

My wife just got off the phone with family in bkk and her general concensous is no partying during new years, but quitely at home or at a hotel, but that is not compulsary of course so bars will be open.
Please take everything I say as well with a pinch of salt.
and have a good time tonight, the basis is to exchange info and get at the truth.
My wife will also not go anywhere near Phuket probably ever especially the ocean cause of ghosts but as you living there you know about that superstition as well.

What I am really saying is on the news here it looks very sad especially all the children (i have small childeren) not you guys already there, but I would not want to come there now fresh
for a holiday and just prop up the bar just my 2 cents.
There are other places too go.
Cheers

CC

I think of it's a shame that people open a thread about a three day period in which they may not be able to drink alcohol, while hundred of thousands of people have lost loved ones.
According to the Bangkok Post, 10,000 people have already lost there jobs in the Thai tourist industry.

I have got a great idea. Let's quit spending money and see if we can put another 10,000 Thai's out of work, just when the tourist economy needs the most help.

Personally, I don't really care about whether drinking is allowed, since I only occasionally have a single beer or glass of wine with a meal. But I think people are taking this "respect" thing way too far. Damaging the tourist economy in Thailand will not bring back the dead, nor will it make a better life for the living.

I went to a bar on His Majesty's Birthday, December 5th. The lights were out in the bar, but it was serving liquor anyway. I ordered a bottle of water, and when the girl asked why I didn't order beer or whisky, I said it was the King's birthday. She laughed so hard I didn't believe it

Is it true that bars in Bangkok (or Thailand?) will be closed the week of the general elections (week of 31st January) ?

Yes, one side of respect as we know it are the portraits of HM the King and Queen. This is the other side.
