As the main planner and tech expert of JI is dead and the bomb factory destroyed I doubt there will be any problems with bombings in SEA in the near future.
As for the Pattini rebels, the Straits Times reports that Taksin plans a 'D-day' offensive to start as early as tomorrow...

I always though 'bomb experts' blowing themselves up was the setup for a joke -- and I guess it is!

are you guys joking or what? just cuz one extremist is gone, doesn't mean the entire movement is going to wither away. throughout the globe -- paris to london to khartoum to indonesia -- there is a MOVEMENT, not unlike the late 60's early 70's movement. muslims feel they are wronged; the youth feel they are repressed; and with or without leadership, there are violent jihadist groups popping up everywhere. the fix: convince muslims that secular governments, and others, are NOT out to f*** muslims; or...

If you look closely at the article he blew himself up during a gunfight with police. I suspect he was attempting to destroy the factory and prevent being captured. Being a non-citizen of Indonesia he would have not received the 'kids glove' treatment they gave Abu Bakir and they probably would have turned him over to the Aussies and the US CIA.

I did not mean to imply that the movement is dead but it takes time for a hydra to grow new heads. During this regenerating period the movement is vulnerable and some coordinated action (like Taksin's D-day) can make it relatively toothless for a long time (the NPA in PI is a good example of this).

CS - thanks for the clarification. Yeah, I agree, there is vulnerability in the movement due to this, and let's hope that gov'ts will take advantage of that.
Wouldn't be surprising if there are is suddenly less action from the South (D-Day or not).
How *IS* that D-Day thing going, by the way?

no offense, but the CPP/NPA in PI is a bad example. first, this was an artificial movement: who really believed in communism in the first place? no one. but even if they did, the Filipinos eliminated the NPA threat by recruiting nearly 1/4 of the ground level NPA members, who then snitched on the other 3/4. of these, about 1/4 of the members were then "disappeared", another 1/4 arrested. the Filipinos to this day have still not captured or killed the CPP/NPA main leader and spokesman.
a better example for you to use might be the two columbian drug cartels: wrap ups of their leaders did have a profound adverse affect, but there were certainly many other factors as well. plus, this wasn't a "movement", despite the FARC's involvement.
point is: muslim youth, whether poor or rich, feel left out and oppressed. for some, they have legitimate arguments; but for more, it's an era of protest and, eventually, jihad. I believe you are either a practitioner or not...for islam. if you believe everything written by the scholars and leaders of islam, then you believe that islam is the only legitimate religion, and all other people must either convert, pay forms of bribes (thus admit that they are inferior), or die. then there are non-adherents. people who live side-by-side with other religions, etc. but to each his own, for now.

I've been talking about this with some expats who have been talking about it at the Rotary Club for about 18 months.
They are taking the possibility very seriously.
BKK, Pattaya or Phuket ?
Where would have the greatest tourist impact.
I thought Pattaya as Phuket already has an alleged lack of tourists.
The target ?
(1) Walking Street (very crowded in the evening)
(2) Hollywood
(3) Royal Garden Plaza (has underground car park)
But Bangkok must surely rank highly being the capitol.
Likely targets:-
(1) Khao San Road (A lot of backpackers with possibly rich parents)
(2) Patpong (The best well known, with shoppers as well as visitors to sex shows.)
(3) Nana (NEP) A total Health & Safety nightmare as well as total fire hazard. A small device here would have maximum effect but would not hit a wide range of tourist types.
(4) Soi Cowboy - Same tourists as Nana.
All very worrying.
