Just a little technical note: The pejorative use of 'third-world' alongside 'second-rate' and 'banana republic' and other such out-of-date terms is where many of you are showing your age and prejudices.
Countries are now rated on their level of human development. The Human Development Index (HDI: range 0 to 1) takes into account factors that affect the lives of individuals in the country such as quality of life, life expectancy, access to health-care, income, and literacy and education.
It's a horribly complex calculation in such a varied world, but it does drag the ranking of nations away from simple economic (GDP) considerations and moves the emphasis back on to a human level.
The 2005 Human Development Report (HDR) places Thailand firmly in the middle HDI group (what a simple bean counter would call 'second world') at number 73 overall (0.773) with Niger in 177th place (0.281) and Norway taking the top position (0.963). That the US rates only tenth is a reflection that this is not solely an economic rating, but a measure of how well citizens fare.
It will be interesting to see what, if any, effect the coup has on the HDI of Thailand in the 2006 and 2007 HDRs.

Can someone post how's the Oils and Soapies are right now? Everything cool? Everything normal? I can hop on the BTS, go to the supermarket, 7-11, massage, etc. Prices the same? Everything open? Restaurants all cool? Lots of girls?
Would love a mongering update related to the change of atmosphere. TV stations back on-line, like CNBC and Bloomberg? Really glad CNN is off the air, it's such a messed up channel anyway. That also means FOX is off the air too, right....can't stand them.
Really would love the financial information channels, however, like CNBC Asia "Profit From It", and Bloomberg as a second source. NHK on the air? Need that for Japan.
Baht to Dollar in Thailand is what right now (not what's listed outside of Thailand, just what's listed inside Thailand) ?
I plan to have a good time, good food, good rest, big hugs from the women. Maybe, if lucky, I find an old fling....I think I re-found her, by a miracle....hope she's there!

As indicated in the link I provided and by postings on this and other threads, business is going on as normal.
That would include stores, soapies, oiles, bars, restaurants, etc, etc, etc.
Also as mentioned earlier today on this thread, the Baht has stablized (too bad for us).
I would expect that rtb is still hosting a roundtable tomorrow and there will be girls in the bars.
As Stick said if you are planning to come, come…
BTW: I am continuing with my business acquisition plans in LOS despite the coup though this may change if they ‘nationalize’ Tamesek’s holdings without market rate compensation (not that I am Tamesek's league)...
