Got this email yesterday from the sister-in-law in Bangkok (along with a lot of photos of kids on flower covered tanks).
"I'm fine, (Dad,Mom also) Don't worry about the overrthrow in Bangkok.
Everythings not so bad as the international news. I saw CNN NEWS reported soldier will be flighting and will be great confusion in Bangkok.
As you see the preious mail about photoes to you, everying it Ok. We are friendly both of soldiers and peoples.
Some peoples take a photo with him and his accessory (Gun, tank....) everybody know he did duty, everybody agree to accept and confirmed this is the best way for this time.
I think will be not happened big confusion. ( I think na, I think) because, we are Thailand. We love each other and not fighting each other."
Sure it is just one persons opinion - but she is Thai. Enjoy.

Everyone sounds so optimistic. Give it a month. When Khmer Rouge took over in Cambodia, everyone gave them flowers too and said how nice they were.

California is huge and there are many various and distinct areas there, with diverse worldviews; you got your rural, you got your urban etc etc. They ain't all fruits and nuts liberals. Half of them are probably Mexican as I write. I hail from the San Joaquin Valley and by God it seems pretty god dang real to me. In fact it usually seems too real.
However, I believe your point is that you can't judge the reality of any nation from an examination of just one fraction of it. Of course you are right in that.
I think that an important question to me--one I have trouble deciding about--is while it seems most Thai are not educated beyond the point of believing what the TV tells them to, are they forming independent opinions about what's happening? I believe that many do, but in my experience they have to trust you to open up beyond glib answers and more smiles.

True or not, this is exactly what you'd expect the martial gov't to say. And I hope it's true. At this point we know that the deposed gov't still has supporters. What will change their minds, money gifts, a purge, a better development from the present, what? Or is the faction tension going to store up for the next crisis when there may or may not be a mediating hand present whom everyone looks up to?
I am hoping that the tacit gentleness of the Thai ways can always guarantee a swift return to order. We'll see how deep they run.

I am not following all of this. Please explain to me.
A Muslim general took over a democratic Buddhist country. Disbanded the congress. Arrested some Buddhists politicians. And all the punters consider that a good thing?
Do you think muslim military dictatorship will:
a) let whore bars work 24 hours a day now again!
b) leave closing time as is, Koran likes go-go bars with beer and naked women.
c) Jihad all godless falangs who corrupt Koran.
Do you think Muslim shiara law, a new Malaysia or Indonesia type society is something to be happy about?
No gogo bars. No massage. No Soapy Massage. No beer. No discos. No western music. UK, Americans and Euros and Australians not welcome or blown up. English teachers fired because why need English when Koran needs to be taught.
Are most of you too scared to write now, are kissing ass and hoping for best or what?
I bet whoever just bought a business, some property or a condo are shitting bricks, since most property of 'infidels' gets historically appropriated.
