Exactly. Who cares.
Very few nations and races of people have kept their noses clean. The majority would have, at some time in their history, commited some sort of atrocity or persecuted a portion of their own or someone else's population.
On the flip side most nations / races would have, at some time or another, contributed something positive to the world.
If you are gunna claim superiority, make sure the ledger is clean. What was done to America's indigenous population, slavery, and the constant meddling in the political afairs of other countries hardly counts as a clean ledger.
White Australia doesn't have the best record either on some of those counts but we ain't in the habit of claiming we are superior in spite of it.

I said "educated" Thais.
I also said that a lot of these educated Thais approved of the coup, but at the same time wished that there was some other way to have changed the government more in line with democratic procedures.

An article called "Friends but not Mates" once tried to understand the relationship between Yanks and Aussies, it featured a cartoon of a uniformed and spit polished but unimpressed looking Smokey the Bear offering a tentative handshake to a beer can holding, singlet wearing Koala. The article said a few things - but the one that sticks was that "Americans generally like people who will agree with them whilst Australians generally like people who will argue with them"
Jama Islamia told us to stay away from Bali after the 2002 bombing - but we went back - their threat aired on the News that day between a story about a Melbourne guy who got burnt to death driving home from work courtesy of a grass fire and the story of a three year old girl in far north Queensland who got bitten on the face by a carpet snake (constrictor) whilst wresting it for possession of her pet rabbit in the family's backyard. A month later 300 houses burnt down in bushfires in our national capital, Canberra.

When the Tsunami hit in 2004 we were first on the ground in Aceh, Jama Islamia's backyard, helping out cause that's the way we are.
We call Australia "the lucky country". Sure we've got our faults and our fair share of arseholes but overall I'd say the average Aussie really believes that he or she is not better than anyone else - just luckier. Enjoy.

Before leaving on my August tour I tore the TV card out of my PC and threw my normal TV in the skip. Haven't watched since. This is 40+ years of conditioning going cold-turkey, but after the last few years of drivel - Big Brother, various jungle/island/fat camps, demonstrably ill-informed documentaries fronted by comedians rather than experts, talk-shows hosted by journalists (Parkinson) being replaced by C-list celebrities using book/album/fil-plugging interviewees as nothing more than straight-men and finally the increasing adoption of US advertising patterns (4/5 ad breaks per 30min prog)...
I just couldn't take it anymore, decided to read more.
(And spend more time in LOS).
Even during the coup I wasn't tempted to access BBC et al. - got all my info from here and A. N. Other forum 8^)
