Yep, gotta agree with that - and if such an attack were to end up having significant reduction in tourist traffic as a consequence, you can bet that the repercussions would not just be governmental, but also end up in far more repressions and reprisals against arab/muslim folks by Thai people in the wake of such a thing, IMO.

The tourist trade could prove rather more robust that we all suspect. After the July 7th attacks on London the media was full of reports of empty tubes and trains, a sense of shock in the air, empty shops yadayadayada - all complete nonesense of course; I used the tube to get to a work appointment on the 6th and again on the Monday after the attack, and unless you had known their had been an incident, and unless you had spent enough time on the London transport system to notice the increase in the number of armed plod about it was pretty much business as usual (and the MET gunning down innocent Brazilians a few weeks later did not help encourage a speedy return to normality.) Four months on and retail footfall in London is back to normal, even up slightly year on year, and hotels are reporting steady trade. Tourist numbers are down a little from one country, you guessed it, the USA, but that also happened after every IRA bombing campaign in the last 20 years so it hardly comes as a shock. A terrorist attack on Bangkok would be a tragedy for sure, but would it cause me to change a planned visit? Not a bloody chance. The problem is not how safe / unsafe the world is, but, in Western Europe and North America, a hysterical media and a largely spineless, supine population. Brown Eye's comments about the poorly thought out British border settlements in the south are well made; we made very nearly as big a mess of that as we did of the partition of India after WW2 and the establishment of the borders or Iraq after WW1. Pax Britannica indeed.

Unfortunately, you are right - and it is the main reason why countries like Iran should not even toy with nuclear items... then again..
