for those that were watching the Nation TV. did you see the military in the background of the office while they were on the air. then suddenly... back to the patriotic images. read on another board that the military (tanks and all) are mobilizing around the media outlets, including the Nation. as you know UBC already cut most of the international broadcasts so I guess its complete media blackout. so I wonder when they will hit the ISPs???

I guess there's some good news in this. If everyone has to "stay inside", that means bars stay open all night, right?

British forign office advice: On 19 September 2006 the Thai Prime Minister, Thaksin Shinawatra, declared a state of emergency in Bangkok. There have been reports of tanks taking up position around the Thai government headquarters in Bangkok and blocking traffic. The British Embassy in Bangkok is closely monitoring the situation. If you intend to travel to, or are currently in Bangkok, you should monitor all available information on the local situation. You should also avoid any demonstrations and large crowds. Movements around government buildings and in public may be restricted until the situation becomes clearer. Taken from:http://www.fco.gov.uk/servlet/Front?pagename=OpenMarket/Xcelerate/ BB

BLOOMBERG: Thai Baht Falls Most Since 2002 as Premier Declares Emergency By Aaron Pan Sept. 19 (Bloomberg) -- The Thai baht slid the most in four years after Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra declared a state of emergency before protests organized to call for his resignation. Thailand's currency plunged from its strongest since January 2000 after a group claiming to represent Thai military and policy chiefs said they had seized control of Bangkok. Thaksin spoke in an address on state television during a visit to New York. The baht has been Asia's best-performing currency this year as record exports spurred trade surpluses. ``The baht will come under more pressure'' after Asian financial markets open, said Marios Maratheftis, a currency strategist at Standard Chartered Plc in London. Even if any attempted takeover of the government ``doesn't go through it will be negative for the baht. The political uncertainty is there and the impact'' will continue, he said. The baht fell 1.3 percent to 37.79 per dollar at 1:03 p.m. in New York, from 37.29 late yesterday, the biggest decline since July 2002. Maratheftis recommended buying the yen, the most-traded Asian currency, against the baht. ``People are going to look at how the stock market takes this news'' tomorrow, said Michael Jansen, senior market strategist in New York at National Australia Bank. ``If we see the stock exchange coming under pressure and foreign investors wanting to get out, the Thai baht will obviously be a lot weaker.'' `More Turmoil' Thaksin dissolved parliament and called elections seven months ago as opposition mounted after his family sold a stake in Shin Corp., Thailand's biggest mobile-phone company, for $1.9 billion. Today, he also fired the head of the country's army. Army Chief Sondhi Boonyarataklin had earlier dismissed speculation of a possible coup and a defense spokesman said Thai military leaders had pledged not to interfere in politics, the Bangkok Post reported on Sept. 14. Ten tanks were outside Government House in Bangkok, the British Broadcasting Corp. said, citing Reuters. Thai forces seized the building after the army chief was fired, Agence France-Presse reported. The Thai army and police now control Bangkok, Sky News cited Thai television as saying. ``If it does turn out to be a coup attempt and there is going to be disruption then all the Thai asset markets are going to come under pressure,'' said Ian Stannard, a currency strategist in London at BNP Paribas SA. The baht selling so far ``has only been minor,'' he said. Best Performer The baht is still up 8.6 percent against the dollar so far this year, beating the Indonesian rupiah for the biggest advance among Asian currencies. Thailand reported a $309 million current account surplus in July, following an excess of $65 million in the previous month, the central bank reported Aug. 31. Exports climbed to a record. For the full year, the country may post a current-account excess of $3.6 billion, or 1.8 percent of gross domestic product, according to Credit Suisse forecasts. Today's news ``is quite disturbing'' because ``the military hasn't been interfering in politics for quite some time,'' said Lars Christensen, a senior strategist at Danske Bank A/S in Copenhagen. ``We are in for more turmoil going into tomorrow'' and investors will shun riskier currencies, he said. The risk of owning Thai government bonds jumped to a two- year high, according to traders betting on the creditworthiness of emerging market countries in the credit-default swap market. The price of the contracts rose to more than $47,000 from $33,000 today, according to HSBC Holdings Plc prices at 5:22 p.m. in London. The contracts, which pay investors $10 million in exchange for the bonds should the government default in the next five years, reached as high as $65,000 earlier today. The yield premium on Thailand's 7.75 percent bond due in April 2007 compared with benchmark Treasuries rose 2 basis points to 60 basis points, the biggest in a month, HSBC prices show.
