Quote: from nasty nick on 5:38 am on Jan. 1, 2007 Its easier to blame, Thaksin then face the truth, that Muslim Pigs did this.
Boy, will you look like an ass when it turns out to be someone else, eh? As it turns out, my own knee-jerk reaction in the first moments of hearing the news was also that it was a Muslim hit. Certainly, some indications point that way, but it's too early to tell for sure. While the hardcore Islamofascists have generally targeted high-casualty prone locales (see: Bali), Thailand's Southern Islamics have usually targeted smaller targets, government installations (schools, police), yet had no trouble killing innocent bystanders, monks, teachers, etc... Explosives were generally improvised explosive devices, and detonated remotely. In this case, so far, mostly non-tourist locales and installations were targeted, though with an alleged 30 bombs to be expected (how do they know that?), who knows what else is there? Casualty count was extremely low, and non high-casualty targets appear to have been targeted... at least so far. This could change, of course, in the next 24 hours -- and while I still have some money (proverbially speaking) that there's some Muslim involvement, I hesitate to point that finger. I mean, let's be serious - the new government has done a lot to open dialogue, and to initiate an atmosphere of more openess? Why would the Southern Muslim want to endanger that? I'll be really curious what ends up coming to the surface - though I'm not giving much credence to the 'Thaksin did it' camp either...

Not sure what your agenda is, thailife -- will this spook spineless investors? Certainly. On the other hand there's plenty that realize that price drops mark an opportunity, simply because at one point that economy and market will recover, and with it, any investments will mature. So, what's your point? Is it that you are running away, and thus everyone else should do the same?

Quote: from charmonman on 7:10 pm on Dec. 31, 2006 I cannot believe how little the US and Canadian TV news networks are covering this. Just watched CTV Newsnet and the lead story was a fluff piece about NYE celebrations in Australia and Taiwan, and the second another fluff piece about the Pope praying for "peace and justice". Finally, they got around to a short item about the bombs in Bangkok. Mind boggling.
On an average day in Iraq, about 50 people die from bombings and other related violence. The US military has suffered an average of 2 fatalities per day (mostly from bombings) every day since the Iraq war began in March 2003.

http://www.nationmultimedia.com/2007/01/01/headlines/headlines_30023026.php Two more bombs explode at Central World, Pratunam Two more bombs exploded in the heart of Bangkok once the new year started, severely injuring many foreign tourists and some Thais. The two bombs exploded nearly at the same time seconds after the new year started. The first bomb exploded at the Best Sea Foods restaurant on the Saen Saeb Canal near the Pratunam Pier just seconds after the New Year countdown ended. Three foreigners and two Thais were injured. One of the foreigners had one leg amputated by the blast. The foreign tourists were having dinner at the restaurant. Police said the bomb was hidden in a bumper tire at the pier. The second bomb exploded at a public telephone booth at the pedestrian flyover linking Central World and Kesorn Plaza. Several foreigners were injured and rushed to hospitals. It was fortunate that the New Year countdown event at Central World was earlier cancelled by 8 pm and thousands of revellers had already dispersed but many were still wandering around. Police had to ask tourists and revellers to try to leave the area as soon as possible for fear that there could be another bomb. Police said the bomb near Central World might be planted shortly before it exploded as police earlier checked the area but did not find it. The latest explosions brought to eight the number of bomb which exploded in Bangkok. Six bombs exploded nearly at the same time at 6:30 pm on New Year Eve. The latest bombs prompted the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration to cancel the alms giving ceremony at Sanam Luang. Despite the earlier six bomb attacks, the BMA initially intended to go on with alms giving ceremony but changed its mind after the latest attacks. There were rumours of bomb explosions in many areas throughout the night and objects suspected to be bombs were sighted in several areas. A suspected bomb was located at the Buddy Bar on Khao Sarn Road about half an hour after midnight and tourists were evacuated from the area. By 1 am, police also disposed another bomb at the Lumpini Night Bazaar before it explodes. The Nation -- by NotPL69 News Network

You didn't hesitate to point the finger at Thaksin. Just because the perpetrators are Muslims, doesn't mean they are from Southern Thailand. There are plenty of young Islamic extremists like the ones who blew up the trains in Spain that are acting on their own. Anyway, Islamic extremists are not noted for acting rationally.

I don't think NP & SC are must hit areas for a muslim attack. We, the foreign P4P people are over estimating our importance if we believe that. NP & SC are insignificant in the row over Muslims and the Thai government in the South. Which doesn't mean they couldn'tbe future targets just to get at something easy. I don't know about the downfall of Thailand either, but Thaksin would have a motive in making the coup look like it can't keep control.

When chaos and violence happen, you get more military and less democracy. Given the recent military coup in Thailand, their power will only grow stronger as a result of the recent violence. If the recent coup was not a military coup, and Thaksin was a military man, then maybe you would have a point (but that is obviously not the case).

Unfortunately the keystone cops will unlikely find the root cause.
Meeting fails to establish culprits of Bangkok bomb attacks: spokesman Government Spokesman Yongyuth Maiyalarp said the meeting of security and intelligence agencies at the Internal Security Operations Command head office late Sunday night failed to establish culprits behind the bomb attacks. The meeting was chaired by Prime Minister Surahyud Chulanont and ws participated by the chief of the National Intelligence Agency. Yongyuth said the agencies needed more evidence to analyse the information. The Nation
Seeing them bumbling around on local TV makes me think they will not find the cause until they actually catch one of the bomb planters red handed then beat the info out of them.
