The billboard is good. A better idea that would really hurt, but it would take some extreme dedictaion and commitment from all the biz owners. Close all the businesses that will be affected by the new midnight close, all clubs, bars, discos, restaurants etc etc for 2 weeks, right accross thailand. Imagine the stink that every tourist and even local would raise, every tourist going home complaining about nothing to do in Los, tourists cancelling left right and centre, that would send a very quick wake up call to Thankforf_ckall, the international exposure would be huge, the damage to his reputation huge, the chance of him being voted out next year, huge. All these businesses would need to suck it and see, they would lose money, but less than they will over a longer period of early closing. Thailand has f_ck all else to offer the tourist that another country cannot offer which is bigger and better, they will lose big time in the long run.

A little Pook told me she might be looking for a new job, she is thinking of becoming an architectural lighting consultant, with red light specialties, somewhere south of here.

I've been trying to think of the implications of early closing for NEP and S/C and Patpong. While I don't have one answer, I think there's a lot of little angles that are going to come into play. Overall, I suspect this is going to be a net-loss for Patpong as a whole. With later closing hours, they are going to attract people who just don't know when to stop drinking. Violence will increase, straight tourists will be alienated, merchants will get greedier for the fewer remaining baht to be had. I'm not convinced that the government goal is the complete elimination of unzoned entertainment. With that in mind I think the net effect on NEP will be minimal. NEP is unbalanced in a way because of the presence of the Crown Group. They have deep enough pockets to survive quite well while tings are unsettled waiting for the new economy to form. By the end of the year, if there are no more changes in operating hours on conditions, I'd expect CG's prices to be up perhaps 10 baht on beers and that they will have taken over one more bar in NEP. The independants are facing a tough choice now. If they have cash reserves, the smartest move would be to do nothing. Keep prices down, use that to attract customers, and run at break-even or a small loss for a while. If things are too severe, reduce payroll by cutting the ugliest dancers. Their situation is like that old joke: they don't have to outrun the bear (CG) they just have to outrun the other guy. Some of the independants are going to fold though, no doubt about it. It's not clear whether that means new owners or a few empty venues for a while. The property owners and masters tenants are well-set and don't need to give leases at desperately low prices. By the end of the year the independants that surive in NEP should be back to modest profitability. S/C is different for lack of a dominant player and its proximity to the new subway stop. If the gov't is happy to let it live for prestige issues, it will probably survive but it's going to be a tough year. The smart owner will probably bide his time and keep his prices stable, and hopefully have the reserves to even expand once the competition starts to fall away. My guess is that by the end of the year you will have fewer bars, but the average bar will be larger. Expect one or two single-width bars to expand into neighboring properties, if ownership and lease terms match up right. Overall I think this is going to be a win for the punter. The average quality of the girls is going to go up. Prices will rise moderately, but it's up to the individual to make the decision if the prise rise is worth the increase in quality. The labor pool is going to shrink and the ugliest girls will be shown the door first. Also out will be the head cases and problem girls. The migration of girls at the top end out to freelancing will continue at the prior rate. The growth of the bottom end of the freelancer/streetwalker market will be from the rejects from go-gos. With more competition for fewer dancer jobs, salaries will remain constant or fall slightly, which should inhibit rises in drinks prices. LT/ST prices should remain essentially unaffected, so long as the number of punters to girls doesn't fall too low. Both S/C and NEP should remain attractive places to go, perhaps even becoming more favorable as the hardcore drunks shufle off to Patpong. In summary, it's going to be an interesting year. Your favorite small bar may go tits up at any moment after June or July, but overall it's not gonig to be as horrible as everyone seems to think.
