One of the girls in the office, just called her home.
It's about 15k from Phitsanulok.

Her mother told her that there are many dead birds laying around. Pigs, dogs and people are sick, some very.

True or not I don't know. But why would she lie.

Bird flu detected in eight more Thai provinces: minister
The Nation
Published on Jan 26, 2004

BANGKOK, Jan 26 (AFP) - The bird flu virus has been detected in poultry
in eight more Thai provinces, in addition to two western provinces where
the disease has already been confirmed, the agriculture minister said
Monday

"From 100,000 samples we have found bird flu disease in eight provinces,
mostly in infected chickens," Somsak Thepsuthin said, adding that ducks,
quails and fighting cocks were also affected in some regions.

"All these areas will be announced today as restricted zones. We will
use strict measures and there will be cooperation among agriculture
ministry officials and soldiers to stop the disease spreading further,"
he said.

Somsak said that all poultry within a five-kilometre (three-mile) radius
of areas where infected birds had been detected would be killed, and
chickens within a 50-kilometre radius would be banned from being
transported.

He said the government expected to spend 1.0 billion baht (25.6 million
dollars) to compensate farmers who have been promised 40 baht per bird
killed -- a sum many say will not cover their losses.

Somsak said he was not sure whether every chicken in Thailand -- which
raises more than a billion birds each year, largely for the export
market -- would have to be killed to curb the disease.

"I can't answer now, but we will do our best and do it quickly," he
said.

Nearly 11 million chickens are believed to have been killed so far in
Thailand in an operation carried out by hundreds of soldiers as well as
government crews.

and a disturbing reply from another forum:-

"It looks like this will keep them busy for a while.

Today I was in what I believe was my first Chicken Roadblock... all
traffic was stopped by police and light lorries of the kind that is used
to transport live chicken were held back for inspection. This was in
Chachoeng Sao province east of Bangkok.

I have my doubts about how quickly they can eradicate the virus. 30 days
says Thaksin. But the system for testing and culling isn't efficient
enough - they don't know where all the farms are because farmers don't
want to register with the government, some farmers want to save their
birds by hiding them or smuggling them out, officials can be bribed to
look the other way, routines for disinfection are not good enough. And
so on. They need a strict and 100% accurate regime and that is a lot to
expect in Thailand.

When Hong Kong had it, they killed ALL their chicken in 3 days. That
stopped it. But I read somewhere it took 3 years to completely halt a
similar outbreak in Mexico."

I don't like this at all, I have a bad gut feeling about it. Sars did not bother me as perhaps it did not really enter Thailand? This is different. Birds migrate all the time.

As I uderstand it. The dogs find the dead birds and eat them.
The chickens all died a long time ago

It's ok to do road blocks, but how many homes with livestock are in the area's way off the main roads.

Try to find a girls home up north, even with the address and map.

Someone needs to tell the locals what to do.
TV would be a good way, about 8.30pm when they all like the soaps.
Otherwise Thai's will do nothing, or something stupid.

As far as I am aware the disease is caught by touching live poultry
Does that mean we should stop choking the chicken? For how long?
