Weightlifter Udomporn clinches Kingdom's first gold medal of the Athens Games, and the first ever by a female Thai athlete Udomporn Polsak brought cheer to the country yesterday when she captured the Kingdom's first gold medal at the 2004 Olympic Games, stepping onto the victory podium with tears in her eyes. Her triumph in the women's 53kg weightlifting category was Thailand's second medal in the 28th Olympic Games. Her victory opened another chapter in Thai sporting history as she became the country's first female athlete to win a gold medal in the Olympic Games. It was also the first Olympic triumph of the Thai Amateur Weightlifting Association. The 150cm-tall weightlifter of tremendous energy, dubbed the little giant by team-mates, became the clear favourite in the category after world champion Ri Song Hui from North Korea, whom Udomporn beat in last year's World Championships in Vancouver, moved up to compete in the 58kg category instead. Only Indonesian Lisa Rumbewas Raema fielded a strong challenge among the eight athletes contesting the category. Udomporn's clean and jerk and overall Games totals were personal bests. Raema picked up a silver with an aggregate total lift of 210kg including 95kg in the jerk event. Colombian Mabel Mosquera had to be content with the bronze with an overall lift of 197.5kg. At Udomporn's home in Nakhon Ratchasima last night, written messages from well-wishers were posted on a wall as family members and neighbours eagerly awaited the broadcast of the weightlifting competition late into the night. Her father Boonsong said he promised before the statue of Thao Suranaree, a highly-respected local heroine, to be ordained for nine days if Udomporn could win a gold medal. Earlier, team-mate Aree Wiratthavorn also cheered her Thai supporters. The petite weightlifter from Kanchanaburi, who stands only 149cm tall and weighs 48kg, clinched the bronze in the women's 48kg category on the very first day of the Athens Games. An overjoyed Aree said in tears after the award presentation: I devote today's success to my country, Her Majesty the Queen and my mother. I was very confident in every lift and tried not to be worried despite the failure in the second snatch. I just maintained concentration and determination in the following lifts. Now, I'm happy to return with a medal although it's just a bronze. It's worth training intensively for the past four years. During the competition, I tried not to think about what colour of medal I should win here. I just warned myself to do what my coaches had advised me to do, and thought of King Rama V all the time. After returning to Thailand, I have to give offerings to spirits which helped me do a successful job here, she added. Komkrit Napalai The Nation The Thai team's Chinese coach, Zhang Jia Min, deserves much credit for the unprecedented success of the Kingdom's female athletes at this Olympics, with another bronze medal won yesterday by Thai weightlifter Wandee Kameaim. Udomporn started off as a trackandfield athlete at high school in her native Nakhon Ratchasima province, which erupted in sheer delight on Sunday night. When coaches got a glimpse of her body strength and talent, she was recruited into the national weightlifting association after being enrolled at the Physical Education College. "She was a stubborn and naughty girl, but she was also a tough, determined person" her mother, Sasithorn Polsak, said. "She was a runner at school but one day she came to see me and begged to be allowed to become a weightlifter. I didn't say no". Her collection of international and local medals is impressive. And when it became clear which weightlifters would be competing in which categories at the Olympics, everyone who knows Udomporn knew she had a very real chance of winning. Udomporn's success looks set to pay off handsomely. Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has promised her a job as an Army officer, and officials and corporate sponsors have pledged to give her more than Bt10 million as a reward for her golden effort. -------------------------------------------- Wandee does family proud! More than 5,000 villagers in Si Sa Ket's Sisalai district gathered at the family house of weightlifter Wandee Kamiam last night to watch a live television broadcast of her medalwinning performance at the Athens Olympic Games. The guests cheered loudly as Wandee, 26, clinched the bronze medal in the women's 58kg category with a brave clean and jerk of 127.50 kg. Her success gave Thailand its third medal of the 2004 Games.Wandee's parents also brought out the 161 medals she has won both locally and internationally.Wandee became a national athlete in 1996. Before yesterday's Olympic success she won two silver medals at an international competition in Poland.

And than this....... Anybody surprised.....? What an absolute idiot and ass this guy is, what did he think? Lick the *** of our great leader? ------------- EDITORIAL I: Medal-grab says a lot about Thai sports Published on Aug 18, 2004 - The Nation Suwat has robbed Udomporn of the pleasure of basking in her victory Our top politicians have displayed a shocking lack of sportsmanship in the wake of heroic weightlifter Udomporn Polsak’s stunning triumph at the Athens Olympics. Telling the young athlete that Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra would “love to see” her gold medal, Deputy Prime Minister Suwat Liptapanlop unceremoniously took the prize from her and flew back to Thailand, leaving behind a puzzled Thai Olympic squad. We had expected opportunists to crawl out of the woodwork following the fairy tale sporting moment, but Suwat beat everyone to it. Like every Thai, Suwat must have been very excited, but that is no excuse for his highly insensitive – if not selfish – move. Magnanimous in victory, Udomporn was big enough to utter the obligatory “the medal belongs to the Thai people”, or something along those lines. In reality, she won the prize through years of devotion, dedication and sacrifice. She deserves to cherish the moments with her gold medal by her side until she presents it as a gift to Her Majesty the Queen. But just a day after getting what she had wanted most all her life, the medal was gone. In what seems to be a crude attempt to score political points from Udomporn’s ultimate personal achievement, Suwat has robbed our heroine of a well-earned opportunity to bask in the biggest triumph of her life. If Suwat had any decency he should have realised how callous it would be to assume Udomporn would use the days following her victory for anything other than enjoying the fruit of her labour. She has beaten a collection of world-class opponents, received the medal and heard the national anthem played in her honour. Surely few people would begrudge her a few days to enjoy her Olympic gold medal. Amid the uproar in Thailand, Suwat changed tack yesterday. He downplayed Thaksin’s wish to see the medal and explained that he had brought it to Bangkok so that a replica made of solid gold could be produced as a special gift to Udomporn. According to officials, the medal is to be flown back to Udomporn in Athens so that she can wear it when she steps out of the plane in Bangkok to a rousing welcome. Suwat’s action in some ways reflects the malaise plaguing Thai sports – the politics and flash-in-the-pan hype. The most important idea in sports development – a state’s willingness to support an individual’s will to personal excellence – has given way to opportunistic people capitalising on successful athletes. Suwat’s antics only serve to show that something is amiss with the way sports are promoted in this country. Knowing that Udomporn and other Thai sporting stars have achieved success despite all that only inspires a further sense of awe and admiration

Very, Very, Very disappointing and extremely lo-so - I sincerely hope that plenty of people have written in to Thaksin's office, but also to Her Majesty the Queen and King's office to decry this pathetic attempt at a grab for the gold. Pathetic, indeed! Harry

What a c_nt. Why couldn't he just show Toxin a piccie of the lady holding it at the podium like everyone else? Because he wanted to feel it as well and toss it up and down and pretend that he and the government had something to do with Thai sporting prowess? At least the outcry will mean this c_nt will lose face and the govt. will stump up for a nice piece of gold for her.

You get 'em Harry! And don't forget to mention all the real important bad stuff them politico higher-ups have done to the people over the years. We're right behind you! On a lighter side, a Turkish woman by the name of Taylan (48kg class) also won for weightlifting and was the first woman to win a gold medal for her country. Turkey apparantly was so overwhelmed they gave her $400,000 in gold coins. Classy!

My sentiments exactly! This is one of the weirdest things coming from the current Thai government, it defy belief that such action ever took place. I mean, can you imagine if a USA or EU athlete would have been subject to similar shenanigans by a serving government minister? It doesn’t bear thinking what the press and media would have made of it. Another thing, in The Nation article (Suwat the Prat), a government spokesman was quoted as saying: “Government Spokesman Jakrapob Penkair told reporters after yesterday’s Cabinet meeting that Suwat told the Cabinet he had borrowed the medal from Udomporn to have a cast made so that a replica in real gold could be produced for her.” Wot? - Doesn’t she even get to keep the original medal? Give us this prat’s email address and we’ll let him know what we think of him. Sarge
