The cowardly towel-head terrorists are at it again, slaying monks and other civilians. It seems that the unelected marionette, aka khun Surayud Chulanont, is short on ideas on how to solve the nation urgent problems but high on conspiracy theories (see bombs in BKK) to prop his discredited cabinet, of junta manoeuvred puppets.
In the meantime people in the southern region keep paying with their lives, I don't know of anything more abhorrent than brutally slaying peaceful men and women of cloth. The story so far: Outbreak of Violence. It makes uncomfortable reading....

The general running Thailand is a Muslim. Doesn't surprise me he's not taking much action.
The Thai's have to tread lightly, a knee jerk reaction with a wide range of retaliation against all of the Muslins in the south will only result in a civil war. They need to add more resources and very actively search out the few cowards and lets the hogs eat them alive.

Civil war would last maybe a month or two if the Buddhist Thai army were fair dinkum,, probably a better option than this ongoing random killing of innocents.
Open the border to Malaysia,, push the pricks back where they should be then close the border with barbed wire patrolled fencing and carefully laid mine-fields would be a nice start.
The soft options just don't seem to work with these fanatic infidels,, when are we all going to wake up to the fact that the only thing they understand is brute force.

this southern "insurgency" (thailand is always smart on branding and packing) is historically well rooted and explainable, not a phenomenon. Heavy suppression during the Thaksin years has fed fanatics with support from "normal" people. too much pressure in the pot. Whats happening now is slow and scheduled release of pressure, cutting off local support towards the fanatics, give it another six months.

The solution is the same as it has been for centuries, "Win the Hearts and Minds of the People". Even before the Roman Emperors used 'bread and circuses to pacify the populace this has been a tried and true method.
The Americans were doing it with great success in Vietnam until Westmorland stepped in and screwed up the whole program in '68. Even today in HCMC the average Vietnamese still loves the Americans (and their dollars).
If the Thais would ease the pressure on the south and effectively address the grievances of the average Muslim (which is not independence but economic opportunity) the logistical support for the insurgents would be undercut.
Whilst I am usually the last to agree with Hillary, I must say that her comments recently questioning the troop surge in Iraq are well thought out.
After the Tet Offensive Westmorland asked Nixon, and recieved, a surge in troops to destroy the VC once and for all. Instead these troops ended up rampaging the countryside hunting the VC (think Mai Lai) and in a few months destroyed any creditability that the US Government had with the Vietnamese People. Six years of winning hearts and minds were thrown down the drain.
I believe that both the Thai and US Governments need to take this lesson from history in fighting their respective insurgencies and rethink their strategies... IMHO...

I fully understand where you're coming from but I've learned over the years that no one wins a war. I have to agree with China Sailor completely.
In my earlier posting I tried to keep it short, but China Sailor took more time and did an excellent job in expressing a well learned point of view.
CS, are you sure Westmorland waited till 68 to screw it up? I got there in 67 and it was screwed up then.
One last point CS wrote

I'm sorry, I'm still laughing, the U S Government learn from History, oh my sides are splitting, they can't ever learn from present day blunders much less history.

.... the bastards are at it yet again; a series of bombings rock southern Thailand killing and maiming innocent people: The Age. Where are now all those fork-tongued, wishy washy liberals who infest Bangkok? They've always been quick in blaming Takhsin for the insurgency (I prefer to call it terrorism). Now that they have a junta ruling them, with a muslim general to boot, things aren't exactly getting better, are they?
Winning hearts and mind is all very well and good but not the right policy when you deal with callous religious terrorists, hell bent on causing mayhem, killing civilians. That also includes fellow muslims who don't agree or cooperate with them. These terrorist fund themselves with a "local tax" (those who don't pay are killed or have their homes burned to ground) and probably with the help of Al-Qaeda.
Solution? there isn't a quick fix, it's complex matter but to give in to terrorism or indiscriminately blaming government policies (as liberals worldwide love to do) is definitely not the right way to go. Sonthi wake up man, forget the satellite and Singapore and get a crack on the real problem you have in your hands.
