Wonder-full Thailand
=================

Bangkok - Thailand doesn't have any of the official wonders of the world, but officials are about to tell potential tourists of the "Seven Amazing Wonders" awating visitors.

The government on Friday announced its Seven Amazing Wonders marketing campaign.

The campaign is designed to help Thailand attain its target of 14.8 million international visitor arrivals in 2007 and 15.7 million in 2008, said Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Governor Phornsiri Manoharn.

Thailand's seven "wonders" have been identified as:

Thai hospitality,
historical sites,
beaches,
natural attractions,
health services,
"trendy" spots such as boutique hotels, and,
festivals.

"The 18 main markets which are targeted for intensive promotions are mainly in the Asia-Pacific, East Asia and Europe regions," said Phornsiri, who noted that 60 per cent of Thailand's visitors are returnees.

Tourism has been Thailand's top foreign exchange earner for decades. Past TAT marketing campaigns that helped put the kingdom on the map included "Visit Thailand Year 1988," and more recently "Amazing Thailand," which, however, stopped short of enumerating the country's "amazing wonders."

Beautiful Bangkok - Capital city ranked third best in the world by prestigious magazine
=============================
Swedish nurse Helen Bjurberg, 35, her husband and three daughters have visited Bangkok three times in the last 10 years.

"I love Bangkok," she said, adding that the city has everything for people of all ages.

The food is cheap and the most impressive thing is the friendliness of the Thai people, said Mrs Bjurberg, one of the foreign tourists interviewed by the Bangkok Post for a survey of tourists' opinions on the capital.

"I have been to several cities in Asia, but I can say that Bangkok is a centre of this region. It is the most perfect place to stay and relax," said Mrs Bjurberg, who has just finished touring around Southeast Asia for two months with her family.

Helen's husband, Jonas, added: "I feel that Bangkok is our home in Southeast Asia. If we can afford a tour, we will come here every year."

The 37-year-old building constructor said he likes Bangkok because it is a perfect base for tourists to travel around the region. "From here, you can go to other countries very easily," he said.

French journalist Victor De Guigne, 25, said he and his girlfriend opted to visit Bangkok because he wanted to see the world-famous temples, experience Thai traditional massage and eat cheap food. Many foreign tourists share their views.

Bangkok was ranked third in the World's Best City survey conducted by the New York-based Travel + Leisure magazine and released in July this year.

The magazine's readers rated Bangkok the best city in the world after Italy's Florence and Buenos Aires in Argentina.

Travel + Leisure is a leading monthly publication with a circulation of almost one million.

Every year the magazine invites readers to vote for the best in travel, from the best cities and hotels, to tour operators. The awards are widely regarded as among the most prestigious and objective in the industry.

Information compiled from online voters found that Bangkok owes its success in terms of popularity among travellers to a number of factors.

"It is a great cosmopolitan city with a rich history and heritage, fabulous hotels and excellent tourism products recognised the world over. It also still has its old charm, allowing high-rise buildings to co-exist harmoniously with the impressive array of glittering temples and palaces," according to the survey.

Now, visitors who once faced severe traffic problems can easily get around on the city's two mass transit systems - the BTS skytrain and the MRT subway.

Travellers who voted for Bangkok also said they like the new Suvarnnabhumi airport, which could make Bangkok an aviation hub in Southeast Asia.

According to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), about 7.4 million tourists have entered the country via Suvarnnabhumi airport alone this year.

Many of them stayed in Bangkok before travelling to other parts of the country. The TAT also expects that the total number of foreign tourists will reach 14.8 million by the end of the year.

To keep the city's top tourist spot status, deputy Bangkok governor Buddhipongse Punnakanta, who oversees its tourism planning and policy, said a number of tourism promotion campaigns were now in the pipeline. Among them is the "Saneh [Charming] Bangkok" project.

Under the project, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has divided Bangkok tourism activities into five areas - arts and culture, dining, entertainment, river cruising and shopping.

He said in the past, the city had never come up with any plans to promote tourism and had let the TAT take responsibility for the task instead.

This had retarded Bangkok's tourism development because the agency focuses on promoting the country overall, rather than a particular area.

The BMA has also earmarked a 200-million-baht a year budget to run tourism promotion projects and started to take part in international tourism fairs in a bid to publicise Bangkok to tourism operators and travellers.

Despite this greater effort, Mr Buddhipongse conceded that maintaining the city's top destination status would be difficult since Malaysia and Singapore had emerged as popular tourist havens. "They are the strong rivals," said the deputy governor.

Kongkrit Hiranyakit, president of the Tourism Council of Thailand, supported efforts to promote tourism in Bangkok. But he said concerned agencies should also think about promoting new tourist attractions besides Chiang Mai, Bangkok and Phuket, which have been on the global tourism map for a long time.

Mae Hong Son and some northeastern provinces also have the potential to become popular tourist spots, but at present tourism authorities have not done enough to promote them, Mr Kongkrit said.

He added that he wanted to see the next government work harder to solve tourism-related problems, particularly crime against tourists, to prevent them from having negative views about Thailand.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Tuesday 26 February 2008 :-

4 mln Thais will travel overseas this year
==============================

About one of every 15 Thais will travel abroad this year, an increase of 10.2 per cent over last year's foreign travellers, the Kasikorn Research Center has projected.

More than 4.1 million Thais will spend around 125 billion baht to travel, shop and sustain themselves overseas, about 30,500 baht per traveller. That represents an increase of 12.6 per cent from 2007, said KRC.

KRC reported that the overseas travel market is likely to continue to grow this year, citing the strengthening of the baht, route extensions by low cost airlines and marketing promotion campaigns which extend the purchasing power of middle class customers.

Laos, Vietnam, Malaysia, Japan, and South Korea are among the more popular destinations, while the popularity of trips to Europe and the US has declined.

Makes sense, with stupid US visa regulations, and the US currency crashing, it's far cheaper to go elsewhere. Nice going, and good on Thai tourists for having fun!

I don’t know that US visa regulations have really become much more ridiculous, tedious, or restrictive in the past couple of years. They probably did get a bit stricter following 9/11 but I doubt that has had much of an effect on a drop in numbers from last year to this year. I know several Thai’s that have been successful at obtaining tourist visa’s to the US recently. A few indicate that it seems to be quite a bit easier for a Thai to obtain a US tourist visa if they apply thru the US embassy in Singapore. Of course not many Thais that might have been turned down at the US embassy in Bangkok have the means of residing in Singapore long enough to be able to justify applying for the visa in Singapore as apposed to Bangkok anyway.

And the weak dollar should be pulling them in – not driving them away. If anything I would say these stats might indicated that the top shelf of the hi-so’s are traveling less or staying closer to home – maybe indicating tougher times for those at the very top (these folks are the ones that are more likely to travel to Europe and the US). While as the article indicates the local travel (Laos, Vietnam, etc) is more indicative of an increase in travel by those not really in the ho-so class. This could be because that class of folks is growing in size and or increasing their purchasing power – or more likely that the increase in low cost routs has simply made it easier for them to travel at reasonable rates outside of Thailand.

Then again they all could just be getting sick of all the Farang fat-asses crowding them out at the more popular Thai destinations.

I see you got to Dafty's dumb remark about the US currency before I did.

A weak dollar attracts, not repels, tourists.

Now we will enjoy a week of defense testimony about this!

It didn't say less thais were travelling to the states. It basically means as more thais start travelling, a greater proportion go to closer cheaper countries and the hi so's that can afford the states and europe are less as a percentage of the total.
