10 days ago Thai airways cancelled all of their NY to Bangkok flights starting July 1- because of the price of fuel. Woke up on Saturday morning last to find an e-mail from Evil-peneval (who works for a newspaper and saw the article) - also knew I had reservations July 5 and late October
Of course the New york office was closed for the weekend- so had to call Thailand 4 times to straighten out- in 6 to 8 weeks they will give me my money back(WTF) but thats all the help they offered- except maybe flying to Los Angeles to connect with their flight to bkk from there-- only problem with that is L.A. and NY are both 17 hours away- so you fly 61/2 hours across country to not get one mile closer-
So much for that great premium economy-- not going thru Japan- and arriving at 4pm (another night to monger) instead of midnight-

Yeah, this is a real downer for New Yorkers. I think the LA-BKK nonstop might not be there next year either.

It is possible that the USA office might accomodate you differently. The TG USA office uses different procedures. Probably worth it to call them Monday morning.

Fuel prices... the reason of the possible demise of Nok Air.

I'm no airline expert but why didn't they adjust the price, then see if tickets would sell, apparently they just don't want anything to do with that N.Y./BKK flight, shit, we may never get a E.P. F/R again
Got me wondering if my C.I. e-ticket L.A./BKK will still be good in Nov.
(or anybody w/any airline, getting to where it's not for sure until you see the plane at the gate)

I believe I read that Thai is reconfiguring the A340-500 to New York to all business class. No more economy.

Chances are that the flights were not anywhere near full at the old prices, so they pretty well know that increasing prices will cause further erosion in ticket sales, making the flights a money losing propostion.

If a product (flight) is in deficit regularly you raise the price or stop producing it, right? But they can only save money by cancelling flights, not make money with it... So in the long run the higher fuel price can only lead to a higher ticket price. Thai is - like all other - just waiting for the industry to raise their price to make less efficient flights profitable again... But price levels are a bit tricky in the airline business... the low cost carriers will be the first to go (for higher prices or for ever...)

Look at the car fuel price in europe, esp. Germany... (1,50€ per liter) people were ready to pay 100% increase over just a couple of years

Nonetheless what a shame to have a booking to LOS and get a e-mail like this
