Woman accused of gulping 1,200 pills

DENPASAR, INDONESIA: A Thai woman has been arrested after swallowing more than 1,200 ecstasy pills wrapped in plastic and trying to smuggle them into the resort island of Bali, Indonesian officials say.
Customs officials said the 24-year-old woman, Sophawat Ueamduean, appeared nervous and was found to have a hard stomach during a body search at Bali's international airport after she arrived on a flight from Bangkok.

She was taken to hospital and 1,280 ecstasy pills were found in her stomach, Bali customs chief I Made Wijaya told a news conference Monday.
"The pills were in a number of plastic wraps which she swallowed about 90 times," Mr Wijaya said.
They weighed 402 grammes and were valued at about 448 million rupiah (1.5 million baht), he said.
The woman, who claimed to be a dancer in Bangkok, told investigators an Israeli man had offered to pay her about 20,000 baht to deliver the pills to Bali, one of Asia's most popular destinations for Western tourists, Mr Wijaya said.
She faces life imprisonment or death under Indonesia's tough drug laws if convicted.
