... reports yesterday that the Phuket disco fire was NOT caused by their prime suspects: a lightening strike, or a failed street transformer outside the club premises... exterior security videos shows no lightening and the transformer remained intact and operational.

... investigators are now turning to causes from inside the club premises... Act of God ruled out... if caused by human negligence (or, God forbid worse), hope they hold someone accountable... couldn't stick it on God.

... many here followed the pathetic Santika fire investigation... took 5-years and an Act of Parliament to convict two low-level culprits... I believe I read neither are imprisoned, pending their appeals.

About the only discos or bars that seem to hold easy exit in case of a disaster are the Muzik Bar and Twilo on Patpong, they have wide entrances that are not blocked in by doors or security. Climax, as BKKdreaming pointed out, now seems risky, as do Insomnia, all of NEP, QBar, BedSupper (how many others ?). They have just one narrow entrance way and, if there is a stampede to get out for any reason, it would be disastrous. Pertinent to note from magnum's post above that fires often start from inside, such as an electrical fault, or a cigarette. It could even be an insane landlord engineering it so as to vacate the place and regain possession.

If you're in BillBoard (in NEP) you'd have no problems with fire, since there's a jacuzzi to dive into. Also, there a connecting door to Las Vegas, in case the main entrance is blocked.

Come to think of it, given the nature of activity in nightclubs/ discos, loud music that necessitate adequate soundproofing, I doubt there are many venues anywhere in the world with what may be regarded as adequate exit routes. Now when I think back about all the clubs, bars, discos that I have visited in my life, I can't recall a single venue (not counting the Patpong ones I mentioned, they are in a different league) that had more than one exit. Nada. More practical to look for the BK-recommeded jacuzzi or for clubs to make it mandatory for guests to carry adequate water bottles.

Report from The Nation dated 21 August 2012 :-

Gutted Phuket pub's operating hours checked
=============================

The Tiger Discotheque in Phuket, which was gutted in a fire that killed four people last week, has been declared off-limits, while an independent group of architects has recommended demolishing the structure's second floor and a deck.

It will be known in a few days if Tiger Discotheque was operating illegally after hours, provincial Governor Tree Akkharadecha said yesterday.

The municipality yesterday restricted entry into the building that houses the pub, while the Association of Siamese Architects under the Royal Patronage of His Majesty the King said the heavily damage deck and the entire the second floor should be taken down.

The provincial police chief and his deputy would be "invited" to clarify the operating hours, why two exits could not be used during the fire, and whether the venue was open beyond the legal limit of 2am.

Highly flammable polystyrene had been used to make decorative items in the venue, possibly in violation of the law, said Bundit Pradabsuk, the head of the association. After the Santika Pub fire in Bangkok - which killed many people on New Year's eve in 2009 - polystyrene had been banned, he added.

Bundit did not give the legal timeframe for owners of venues to change from polystyrene to other substances.

He said there were eight fire exits at Tiger Discotheque, while the law only required six.

A lawyer representing the venue said the fire exits caught fire, preventing patrons from using them and forcing them to flee through the front gate.

The Provincial Electricity Authority has already dismissed an electrical short circuit as the cause, as cited by the lawyer.

An inspection of fire safety features and all entertainment venues in Phuket is underway to find any violations, the governor said.

... the latest in the long list of Thailand hotel incinerations... yesterday... the Grand Tower Inn Hotel seems a total loss.

... the immediate claim of arson made by the Thai hotel owner, clearly states his willingness to negotiate with authorities for a sympathetic ruling of arson, deflecting from him any responsibility for the dead.

... guests being incinerated in Thailand hotel fires seem to have settled into a seasonal certainty... measurable right up there with Thailand tourist arrivals, Thailand tourist departures, Thailand hotel fires.

Fatal hotel blaze 'was arson'

Published: 28 Jan 2013

A man was killed and 11 people were injured when a fire broke out at the Grand Tower Inn Hotel in Khlong San district early yesterday, with police suspecting the blaze was an act of arson.

A firefighter helps a guest onto a crane during the blaze that killed one man and left 11 other people injured.

Four men and seven women were injured in the fire - five Thais, two Japanese, two Chinese, one Korean and one Lao national.

Pol Lt Col Arwut Udomrat, an investigator at Samre police station, said the fire broke out about 2am.

At least 10 fire trucks responded, and firefighters managed to get the blaze under control after one hour. All eight floors of the hotel, on Charoen Nakhon Road, were damaged.

Police found the body of Pongkorn Boon-aram, 45, a worker at the hotel, in a bathroom on the third floor. They suspect he died from smoke inhalation.

The injured were sent to Taksin and Thon Buri 1 hospitals. Some of them have since been discharged.

Pol Maj Gen Rassadakorn Yingyong, chief of Metropolitan Police Region 8, said the fire broke out almost simultaneously in four different spots on the 1st, 2nd, 6th and 7th floors.

If the fire had been accidental, the blaze should have started at one spot before spreading to other areas, Pol Maj Gen Rassadakorn said.

However, police have not yet ruled out other circumstances, including electrical short circuits, as causing the fire.

Atcharawdee Chaisuvirat, Khlong San district chief, declared the building off-limits, fearing the fire may have damaged the building's structure. That could make it vulnerable to partial or total collapse.

Decho Iamcheerangkul, the owner, said he believed the fire was an act of arson. He said he will ask the manager if there had been any conflicts with any staff or guests.
