Y'all miss the point here.... this driver did return the gold when most would have driven away thanking Buddha for their luck.
I remember when a BG I knew left her iPhone in a taxi, when she called the phone the taxi driver cursed her and laughed before turning the phone off.
I would bet that if that driver had gold left in his cab he would have driven home and buried it in his back yard until he could safely sell it...

Well, now here's the thing...this kind of behavior, the taxi driver returning the gold, is something that "we" farangs with our penchant for disparaging the Thais as self-serving assholes (granted, usually with very good cause!!), occurs outside our ability to understand and explain it.
And this is, for me, one of the wonderful things about Thailand...that people can surprise you like this guy in the news story did, that they can be totally UN-self-serving and genuine, good, good humans sometimes.
Did any of you ever see that horrible piece of shit movie, that Matt Dillon "vehicle" called City of Ghosts, which he starred in, directed, and (I'm guessing) wrote? Where almost every Cambodian (and Thai, for those sequences) is portrayed as the most reprehensible, shallow piece of shit imaginable? Actually, women of any nationality, including farang, don't fare too well either, haha...
Though there is one great moment in that movie (SPOILER ALERT...as if anyone f***ing CARES in this case, hahahaha) : in the end, Matt Dillon's character leaves one million US dollars in a hefty bag in the back of the car he's just "gifted" to his dedicated Cambodian driver...the money is in two hefty bags.
One of the bags, the driver takes to the local wat, and donates it to the monks (who most likely took it and f***ed hookers with it and bought tons of music and movies, but that's another movie, hahaha).
Let me tell you, with 25 years experience interacting with Cambodians, I can TOTALLY vouch for the plausibility of that act at the end of the film...I know any number of dirt-poor, honest, totally good-hearted Cambodian working-class guys who would do exactly the same thing.
Yeah, Thailand is not Cambodia, and there are probably a lot more genuine, good-hearted Cambodians than there are Thais in this day and age...but yeah, the Thais that fit that description still do exist, as the cab driver in this new story has proven...

All other things aside, such reports make for soulful reading. At whatever economic level each one of us is stationed we are open to the temptation of malfeasance, fudging or some form of secret removal. It could be a large sum credited erroneously to our bank account tempting us to close the account and scoot, or a favourably wrong amount of change handed back by a cashier, or some such. How many 'beneficiaries' of such errors would actually point it out or return the change ? Suppose you had gone all the way back home before spotting the error would you have troubled yourself to return that change to the vendor (small change for you but big money for the vendor) ?
The taxi driver did all that. Such acts rate much higher in earning him "divine merit" (to use a Thai expression) because he is on the lower rungs of the economic strata and thereby faces more pain and injustice in the socioeconomic milieu. The shining lesson in this is that he never felt tempted in the first place. Just thought it was his duty, spending his fuel and time to go around looking for the owner. No cost accountant to advise him on how much to charge for the effort or how to assess the economic value of his act to the owner of the gold.
By a coincidence, on the same day that I read this, there was a report in the press where I live about a young lady, who works as a garbage picker, finding a box of gold jewellery discarded in the bin. What does she do? Picks it up and goes to the local police station to hand it over. Given her character that was just a natural act for her. The bigger miracle, I thought, was the police actually taking the trouble to restore the jewellery to the owner. The jewellery was reportedly worth around $5500 and the relieved owners gifted her a little over $200. Well, now...

Thats why I like my smartphone it locks if I put it down after a second drives her round the bend.

Sorry to hear about your marriage I been with mine for 13 yrs she knows me too well no matter how well I cover my tracks.
