An idea just occurred to me while taking a shower, as they always do. Actually, it was Skip's avatar that triggered it. Here is a money making idea for you who post a lot. If you have posted a lot in the forum, your posts will be all over the forum, and that means if you have an avatar it would be shown to the forum members.
You could sell your avatar space (100 x max height of 160) to any other member who wants to promote something or just brand some product. Okay, they is no link yet, but it can be modified to do so.
I will arrange a revenue split of 60:40 where the owner of the post (avatar space) gets 60% and 40% to me for maintaining it. I have not figured out the price yet, perhaps we can discuss this. Anyone who wishes to advertise, just PM the owner of that space, and if he accepts, he will in turn contact me, and I will set it up.
What do you guys think of this idea?

Albeit I am a marketing whore, I think that's a terrible idea - we are already innundated with too many advertising banners, as it is - and an avatar should be a reflection of the user, not a cheap means to make a buck.
If this were implemented, all it means is that I will add the avatar space to my ad blocker, resulting in ALL avatars not being seen.
A better idea, IMO, would be to repurpose the signature space at the bottom of posts for this purpose, with a specifically sized graphic banner (i.e. the user can add a graphic advertising banner, of specific THIN dimensions, or use a 4 line text advertisement.
This, I believe, would be a better application.

Actually it sounds like fun.
An added advantage is that if the renting member puts another on iggy he would be losing revenue.
However I would like to see the avatar advertising linked to high volume ads. If I were to give up my 'devil monkey' logo I would like to generate steady clicks for my rented space...

I found out on the Z forum that iDuck can't see the Blackberry ads for that reason (and he didn't even know anything about them). But I don't think many people are using that ad blocker software, so not a bad idea to me.
Another idea is to charge members a fee for posting the words "Apple" or "iPhone" in a post.

I'm quite certain that, under ideal circumstances, BK could link the advertising space to Google Adwords - though unfortunately the nature of BTF would not allow that (see: MangoSauce).
Not really any other effective game in town.

Actually there are plenty of other effective games in town, I never quite worked out the mango sauce thing if that really was the reason he closed it down, with his traffic there were many other ways to monetise the blog even on a not ideally suited subject for making $$$ like thailand shagging.

I've talked to my dog... there's no way he accepts it to be replaced by a commercial ad.
To have this work, you should evaluate the benefits for the publisher as well as for the advertiser.
No wonder why Thai people have such great ideas.... being in the shower all the time....555!

I think he was just not very good at that 'business' thing - just based on personal experience, as I used to run adverts with him.
Personally, I feel that site could have been monetized much better, so I agree with you.
