Amazingly enough I just finished Bored of the Rings. I was amazed that I had not found the work earlier, having been a fanatic about JRRT. I did enjoy the work but not as much as I thought I would. A friend of mine found it in Maxims Inn library and "borrowed" it from there. However it is definitely enjoyable to see the original story gain the limelight. I am looking forward to re-reading the entire collection, and have been postponing it in anticipation of the next movie. CJ is correct I have tried numerous authors over the years, and have enjoyed many, but each and every time I have read any to Tolkien's works I come away refreshed. Just my 2 cents

MrJoe, give The Silmarillion another chance. On my latest attempt (after decades) I found it to be totally approachable, and it really answers a whole lot of riddles. Essentially LOTR, epic though it be, is the final few years of a struggle that was going on for a score of millenia. Sauron wasn't even the real No.1 Bad Hat (he was the principle lieutenant of Morgoth, who was tossed out of the cosmos at the end of the First Age). Gandalf, who has many other names, is of the same order of being as Sauron and was dispatched from the West (i.e., the supernatural realm) to deal with this lingering problem some 6000 years before success was achieved. He had 4 colleagues, only two of whom even make it into the story (Saruman and Radaghast), the other two being off East somewhere and are not even named. Tom Bombadil was a semiretired being of a higher order than Gandalf, none higher except for the Supreme Being. It is possible to guess at his identity based on a collation of remarks in the Silmarillion alongside LOTR. In fact very likely he is the same demigod who created the Dwarves in competition with his Boss's Elves (and had to apologize for it later, as it was a trifle presumptuous.) Bombadil makes it not at all into the film, of course. These are not intended as spoilers of your fun, there are hundreds more of jewels like this to be found that enrich and embellish the enjoyement of JRRT's work as a unity.

CJ, I did read it so I learned all that stuff, which was the only thing I enjoyed about the book--learning all the background. I remember being surprised by T. Bombadil because for some reason he was my least favorite character in LOTR. I should read it again and will if I get the chance. I guess you've read other "texts" on Middle Earth compiled from JRRT's notes etc and written by Tolkien scholars? I looked at some of those as a kid.

Never read any of the other JRRT works besides the five aforementioned, or any of the redacts of them that I recall. The newsletters of the Society I received for a couple of years but don't recall what was in them, although I think they were mostly concerned with the linguistic stuff. A lot is no longer in print. I did go to Asia Books at Landmark and buy the uttery beautiful boxed set of hardcover illustrated editions of The Hobbit and LOTR, which is like 4000 baht but IMHO well worth it. And promptly re-read both, prior to essaying The Silmarillion again. I do not usually indulge myself about books, but JRRT is special and the paperbacks don't do him justice.

I'm much the same about books, I love them but normally do not indulge myself -- I tend to buy used, borrow or occasionally buy paperback. But one of my proudest posessions for years was a beautiful boxed set of TLOR covered in really nice black cloth which was given to me when I finished The Hobbit. So my memories of JRRT are always of holding those substantial books with thier fine paper pages... I'm going to Landmark.

i get accused of posting inane posts just to get my number up. CJ and Mr Joe are doing the same i think. LOTR's is my favourite book, but i don't think it's appropiate to go on about it on this thread. either PM each other or open another thread, this one is about who we are. not books, films etc.

You'll love this edition then. LOTR is a single hardbound volume with 50 full color plates commissioned from Alan Lee to commemorate the centennary of JRRT's birth. And The Hobbit, in a slightly larger format (but the box is blocked so the two books fit flush) The Hobbit has both b&w illos and color plates by Lee, but for some reason they printed text on the offside of the plates in this book, while not doing so in LOTR (which is better.) The dust jackets and the box are replete with some of the full cover plates, so you will see what Lee's work looks like before you buy (the set is sold sealed in clear plastic.) There are at Asia Books matching paper bound and trade bound editions also from Harper Collins but, I urge you to go for the hardcover set.
