Had a great time at a couple of Khmer restaurant/bars in Long Beach this past Saturday night. We started the evening at New Paradise Restaurant on Anaheim St. The place had a decent sized crowd due to a Cambodian Student Association party. The lok lak and frog legs were good; next time I should try one of the many fish dishes on the menu. The entertainers (4 singers and a live band) sang mostly Khmer traditional and pop songs, with a golden oldies cover occasionally thrown in (was that actually a Bee Gees song I heard, sung in Khmer?). After most of the students and a few other customers danced the ramvong, a couple of DJs took over and kept the party going.
We left to check out Green Mango directly across the street. Unfortunately we couldn't get in since the place was packed to the gills.
The last place we went to was the Dragon House. It's the largest and most popular Khmer nightclub in town. The crowd was 3 times as large as the party at New Paradise. Fantastic singers perform here, most notably Chhom Nimol. Chhom Nimol is a twenty-something year old Cambodian who moved to Long Beach from Phnom Penh a couple years ago with her siblings. She comes from a family of singers, including her brother and sister here in Long Beach. The house band was a little off, but that didn't stop people from doing various versions of the ramvong and some line dancing. Some serious drinking going on too. We left shortly after a minor scuffle broke out, around 1:30 am.
Besides singing traditional Khmer songs, Chhom Nimol also sings lead for Dengue Fever, a Silverlake-based band that plays something like Cambodian pyschedelic sixties rock. As described from their website http://www.denguefevermusic.com/
"This sextet has an interesting sound featuring Cambodian vocalist Chhom Nimol and saxophonist David Ralicke, who has toured in Beck's band. While Nimol delivers bright, multi-tracked vocals in her trebly Oriental inflection, Ralicke juxtaposes nicely on saxophone for a well-rounded sound. Guitarist Zac Holtzman (Dieselhead) provides angular, repeated guitar patterns that seem just suited to this Cambodian-indie rock concoction. This was just the idea of Zac and his brother Ethan (Farfisa organ) who went to Long Beach's Little Phnom Penh Cambodian community to enlist a singer that could deliver the vocal style they came to love from '60s Cambodian rock music. They lucked out when they found Nimol, a Cambodian pop star from a long line of entertainers that has even performed for the royalty of Cambodia. This album contains a mix of the Cambodian '60s rock the band started covering along with originals sung in Khmer."
I've seen Dengue Fever a few times and I really like their shows. I also think the Dragon House could be a good place for a RT, provided we don't cause a fight by hitting on the wrong woman.
