BTW I hope you will agree that "A Shot in the Dark" (made before The Pink Panther") was the best and funniest of the series. Clouseau was played almost straight (an understated klutz rather than over the top as in all the films after Pink Panther while in PP itself Sellers played him somewhere in the middle.)

Admittedly Pink Panther was almost as funny, and so essentially it is a tossup, but clearly the first two were much better than any of the follow ons.

Just as Dr No and From Russia w/Love set the standard for the James Bond series, and it was downhill from there.

Agreed. And the son of the pink panther, still with Lom but with Benigni as Clouseau Jr. was a disaster...

fib.

(whispering so that nokna doesn't hear); Agreed on all counts.

Classic moment from Dr. No. The bad guy comes to check and see if JB is dead. JB, who unbeknownst to the bad guy is calmly waiting behind him in a rattan chair, promptly shoots the guy in the back.

What other "hero" would do that? None of that giving the bad guy a chance bullshit before you shoot him.

Too cool. Just the way it should be done. (IMHO That's why Connery was the best; under the smooth exterior JB is a badass hard guy and Connery was the only one to look like that was true of him.)

A small redirect.

The bad guy was the inept geologist Prof.Dent. he opened the bedroom door, fell for the old pillows under the sheet trick, and emptied his silenced medium sized automatic into the "body".  Bond has him covered, they scuffle a bit, Bond tries to get him to talk, he won't. Goes for his gun which (as Bond knows) is empty. Bond's line is: "That's a Smith & Wesson, and you've had your six."  Muffled phoom phoom from the silenced Walther PPK 7.65mm.

BTW sound-suppressing automatic pistols is a lot trickier in real life than in the movies. And sorry to Major Boothroyd, but a .32 Walther is only a slight improvement on a .25 Beretta. The 'delivery like a brick through a plate glass window" just isn't. 9mm short (.380) is a little better, and available in the same model Walther, which is still made. But pistol fighters would still consider that as a backup gun only, not as a primary weapon. Fleming relied on a real life gun enthusiast and writer named Goeffrey Boothroyd for his ordnance tech intel. Fleming was a formidable (naval)intelligence professional but wasn't much for wet work (although, he was responsible for the death of at least one Japanese agent in NYC just before Pearl Harbor.)

All that you tell me comes back to me now and I know that you are correct but could I be getting it mixed up with something else? I distinctly remember 007 shooting someone without warning...

Oh well, I like my version better even if it's just a product of my imagination.

Yes, I know to supress a pistol is not so easy; for fun some freinds and I (one was an armorer) tried to build some devices for our Berretas.

Modesty should preclude me, but, have a look at US Patent 5136923.

I suppose no prizes will be given for guessing what name I'd find on it?  ;)

Hi CJ -

Did you ever see  Peter Sellers in the film "The Party"? It's hilarious. The opening scene where he destroys a huge outdoor film set is one of my all time favourites.

Yes snowbird, Sellers was hilarious in "The Party" and the opening scene was just out of this world. He gave a new twist to the old Ganga Din story
