MrJoe, yes, I like JRRT very much, the emergence of the current film trilogy even moved me to go re-read The Silmarillion (which many people find impenetrable). And that book explains a lot that is left hanging or unexplained in LOTR, because JRRT intended Silmarillion to be published together with The Hobbit and LOTR in one edition, but no publisher would agree.
However I also enjoyed the "Bored of the Rings" (Harvard Lampoon 1970s vintage) parody. I admit that when I was a teenager I was a member of the Tolkein Society, so I have been reading and re-reading his work for 40 years. It still never disappoints.

Wow.
I was never a member of the society but I read the Hobbit at 10 and after that TLOTR at least 8 times growing up. It literally changed my life and my best freind were fanatics who studied the languages and the histories of Middle Earth and both of my beloved dogs have had names from the trilogy.
I know all about JRRT's original intention and tried to enjoy my reading of The Silmarillion but perhaps I was too young and I never gave it another chance.
I remember Bored of the Rings but I think I was offended at the time. Don't mess with my JRRT !
Isn't amazing that they finally managed to do what we thought would never be possible and make a movie that at least comes fairly close to doing the books justice? (Especially given the inherent limitations.)
