I've been hunting around all my old video tapes this afternoon, bringing out some old ones to capture and burn to DVD. Anyone remember this film? "The Good Woman Of Bangkok" Documentary about a Patpong girl that the film maker falls for (he was Australian if I remember correctly), he ends up buying her a farm etc but she ends up returning to work in an MP when he comes back year (s) later to find her. She has a 'lazy' eye, and talks frankly about the customers and her life. Also found a documentary tape with all the BBC reports of the 1992 uprising (sic), a Channel 4 documentary about katoeys in Chiang Mai / Pattaya, A political documentary about Thailand, various other films about the crack bangkok Unit designed to bust underage girls out offorced prostitution (mainly hilltribe girls in Phuket) All interesting stuff. Edit: Just watched bits of it as I converted it to MPEG-2 The filmake was an Australian Dennis O'Rourke, and it was made in conjunction with the ABC. Good film.

Cut and paste from a website for those who are interested on the guy. Sounds like a talented doco....where do I get my copy??? Dennis O'Rourke was born in Brisbane, Australia. For most of his childhood he lived in small country towns, before being sent to a Catholic boarding school for his secondary education. In the 1960's, after two years of unsuccessful university studies, he travelled in outback Australia, the Pacific Islands and South East Asia, and was, for brief periods, a farm labourer, salesman, stockman, oil-rig roughneck and maritime seaman. During this time he taught himself photography and began to work as a photojournalist. Wanting to make films, in early 1970's he moved to Sydney, where the Australian Broadcasting Corporation employed him as an assistant gardener. He later became a cinematographer for that organization. From 1975 until 1979 he lived in Papua New Guinea, which was in the process of decolonisation. He worked for the newly independent government - teaching documentary filmmaking techniques to Papua New Guineans. His first film, YUMI YET - INDEPENDENCE FOR PAPUA NEW GUINEA, was completed in 1976, and it was widely acclaimed. His other films include ILEKSEN - POLITICS IN PAPUA NEW GUINEA (1978), YAP... HOW DID YOU KNOW WE'D LIKE TV? (1980), THE SHARK CALLERS OF KONTU (1982), "COULDN'T BE FAIRER" (1984), HALF LIFE - A PARABLE FOR THE NUCLEAR AGE (1985), "CANNIBAL TOURS" (1988), THE GOOD WOMAN OF BANGKOK (1991) and THE PAGODE DA TIA BETHE (1993). The most recent film is CUNNAMULLA (2000) , which is set in an Australian outback town. Prizes awarded to CUNNAMULLA include the Film Critics' Circle Award for best Documentary Film, the Award for Best Editing at the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival, the Grand Prize at the Hollywood Documentary Film Festival and the Australian Film Institute Award for Best Direction of a Documentary Film.

Sorry to just cut and paste but after reading the first bit about the guy I became interested in the movie and this is what the filmmaker said about the doco: "Like the Brecht play which inspired the title, this film is an ironic parable about the impossibility of living a good life in an imperfect world. It is also an attempt to describe in this form, and to conflate, what is so banal about sex with a measure of what is profound. It is a film about prositution as a metaphor for capitalism, here played out across the borders of race and culture, and about prostitution as a metaphor for all relations between women and men. It is also about voyeuristic tendencies which are inherent in all film making and film viewing. It is my hope that, as with Brecht, we are confronted with a vision of ourselves, thus forcing the consideration of how personal sexuality affects political and philosophical beliefs. In this film I have exposed myself in order to force the audience to reconsider the whole nature of documentary film practice. Under the thrall of our separate desires, we are all implicated in some way." Sounds deeper than just a bash of a lonely farang in LOS, and goes towards what some have said on this forum about where he says "...the impossibility of living a good life in an imperfect world.". You should watch it again with this perspective and see if you think its still about farang bashing... How about a couple of beers instead.....I need to save my money for helping thai girls reach the good life in this imperfect world of ours....

Actually there are a group of young Aussie pricks in the film who profess that they frequent the bars to further the future of Thailand. "These girls send money home to further the eduction of the young. In years to come, this wont exist, that's why we come here". They finish with a rousing "GO AUSTRALIA". Very spiritual. Actually it is a very depressing piece of work. Aoi ends up in a seedy massage palour "because it is my fate". She also confesses hatred of all men, men who have forced her to a life of being f***ed left right and centre, the ugly, the old and the obese. I notice the film is noted everywhere I look as 82 minutes. My version seems to be 75.

Isn't there some truth to the matter, that their patronage of the girls provides them with money to send back home? Isn't that why many of the girls are here? Of course, the guys are here for their own pleasure first - but as a rationalization mechanism, providing money to the poor doesn't seem like such a bad one. (aside from the girls that spend most of their money on drugs, gambling, and lazy-boyfriends - as opposed to spending it on lazy fathers that waste it on drugs, gambling and alcohol. Some small fraction send it home and better the family's life.)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but its probably the bit about "...to further the future of Thailand" that Yurune had the issue about which I would agree with him. The "Go Australia" was probably just a bit of drunken bad humour in this situation taken out of its little context. Also can see the bit about Aoi and her hatred towards men. On the most fundamental level of understanding - anyone who believes that all these girls like what they do, is just kidding themselves for their own benefit. I say fundamental because there are a number of levels that could explain Aoi's position. Choosing the lesser of an evil doesn't equate to them enjoying it (but I'm sure that some do - there's always an exception). Simple way to prove the above is to ask a tbg what she wanted to be when she was a little girl. Unless they are joking and say bargirl to avoid answering the question, do you really think that these girls grow up wanting to sell their bodies?? How rough of a ride (no pun intended) they had to where they are now would probably dictate how "jaded" they are.

The "send money home" line is a very used line which im sure most already know. As well as several of the cliches so many of the ladies are repeating. I have seen some ladies when they start working. And what I observed from that was that from not support family back home (rather the opposite) 2 of them was thrown out from home in fact. Then when they started it just took a month to spill out the line "send back home". They may or may not. Im bound to believe they do thou. If for nothing else, they by that create a reason to justify their choice. And according to buddism, they are helping which make the work more easier. And of course, the poor farmer daughter, no money line despite overpaying customers who threw gold and phones at them was there as well. And the plethora of other cliches from the bararea. I have as fun as anyone else there, but in these cases I actually liked the ladies more before they started. They was more sweet, and then transformed into more mercenary. But I guess thats the road they all wander.
