John La Rue watched the soldiers from the side walk as they marched trough the local main street. He did not watch them often, and when he did it was from a retracted position behind some of the other locals.

John had been out again last night.

It was quite a believable scheme really. John had a sailing boat at his grandfather’s country cottage, out by the seashore, a mere 30 minutes away, well make it 1 hour and a half if you went by bicycle.

The story was that they went out torch fishing in the clear autumn nights.
Since the occupation the universities had been closed. John had finished his A- levels and was lucky to land himself an apprenticeship as an electrician in the local paper mill.

He worked shifts and the days he worked evening shifts, he would go out with the boat after the shift. Getting back early in the morning he would have enough time for a few hours sleep before the next shift.

So, the story was that he was out fishing with his friend, they contributed to the scares food supplies in their respective households.

The local German military administration ensured that their occupation force was well fed by obtaining what they needed of produce from the local farmers.

Families like John’s and others had to cater for themselves as best as they could.
His controller had agreed it was quite a believable story, simplicity was often the best if you had to deviate from the truth.

As a matter of fact they were fishing, that is., they were fishing too. On their trips along the coast they easily sailed across the border undetected by anyone and hence moved valuable human assets off the local territory and into the relative safety of neutral neighbouring Sweden.

The human assets where determined by John’s controller, John never new their names, where they came from or why they were valuable. He only knew that the local resistance wanted to move these people off Norwegian soil and out of the grasp of the German occupying force.

To emphasize the credibility of their story they even got some fish from his grandfather’s neighbour, a local fisherman who had been there for as long as John could remember.
He would get his fish back the morning after and sell it to the Germans the very same day if John and his friend cought something.
Some days they simply returned empty handed, you could not pretend luck every night.
On one occasion a patrolling German at the outskirts of town had even given John a cigarette out of shear sympathy upon hearing his miserable story all-nigh bad fishing – luck.

However, things had gotten a bit too complicated recently. His friend’s father had been taken in for questioning and John was genuinely concerned his mother would be next. John’s father had died the year before from stomach cancer so his mother would be presumed as the next in line to know about his undertakings.

John’s thoughts were interupted by a light tap on his shoulder.
He turned and saw a man he did not know personally, but who’s face he knew of. “Your mother was taken in for questioning earlier today and she is being detained”, he said with a plain face.

In a flash of a moment John realized that this man, a man he never offered a thought, had to be working with the resistance same as him.
“You’ve got to go undercover, come with me”

Being young, he had just turned 20, John trusted the man on his word without hesitation. This time it turned out the right thing to do.

The two of them walked with steady paces, but not too brisk, towards the eastern outskirts of town.

The other man explained John that he would take him to a safe house where John would have to hide for a few days.
When arrangements were in place he would be guided across the border and out of harms way.

From exile in London the Norwegian government ran an extensive refuge and transit camp in Southern Sweden, training and selecting young men for duty with other allied armed forces in preparation of the anticipated counter offensive against German occupied territories by allied forces.
Many of them would see fighting and some would die, before this war was over.

The awesome scale suddenly struck John. Fleeing across the Swedish border whilst his mother was detained?
If he, John, disappeared from the surface of the earth it would confirm the very suspicion the Germans may have with him.
They would keep his mother detained locally for a month or two in the hope that would make him reappear. Next thing, she would be on a ship to a camp in Germany.

For John La Rue the case was clear. His mother, his girlfriend and John himself would cross the border to Sweden together or not at all.

John stopped them both short in their tracks and told the other man as much.

“Tell my controller to meet me tonight at the usual place. In the meantime I have some arrangements to make and some people to see. The safe house will have to wait”.
Before the other man could respond or react John turned left at the next lane, and uphill.

For a start he had to remove weaponry hidden on his mother’s property. He had a few comrades he knew did things same as he, although they never spoke about it.
There was a fair chance they would stand up for him, they themselves were involved, hence at risk.

John stayed in hiding for the remainder of the day and reported to the factory that he had come down with a cold after the late night fishing.

If John himself was sought for it was not public yet, so any query by the Germans at work would get an innocent response.

When John turned up at the safe house he had a plan.

Upon entering the ground floor lounge he were met by not only one man, but three.
He had met his controller before, when contact was established, but since then information about jobs had been transmitted in other ways. To be met by not one, but three meant serious business,

To be continued…..
