Just came back from my first trip to LOS 3 days ago, now suffering from Thailand Withdrawal Syndrome. I have no motivation at all to work (didn't have much before I left), the girls around me are paper, plastic AND trash bag material (I work in a high tech company), and I just don't know what to do with myself all day besides dreaming about retiring in LOS. Of course I know that's not realistic at 27 years old and almost no savings. Unlike some people here, it takes me 24 hours or so to get to thailand, and I can only make it once a year, twice at the most, my next trip isn't until march/april and I don't know if I can last that long before I pull the damn trigger to end my misery. How do you guys cope with it?

Mzeng, A two edged sword this, discovering LOS at a young age without the means to feed your new found needs. I sugeest following: First - Tactical : Work like crazy and save for next tour. Keep your mind off things with plenty of exercise / activity. Make every tour a project and plan accordingly. Work on the plan rather than think about LOS. Second - Strategic : If possible try to position yourself for career moves that get you travelling Asia. Note: It is important not to mouth off about how great LOS is within earshot of your workplace, or they will never send you there. At 27, this strategy may seem a fantasy, but I can assure you that time passes a lot faster than you think. If you can't make more than one trip, work on extending that trip as long as possible, with all associated adventures. Try not to end up with a 'sweetheart' in p4p there. If so, I suggest you butterfly to keep sane. Good to read 'Money still number one' to keep your head right, if you are going down that path. I suffer enormously each time I leave, and I will have be there six times 12 months to October this year. I should know better, since I am early fifties. I don't think we ever harden to it. Every morning the fisrt thing I think of is LOS, my girls, and the 'party' nights in Bangkok. Good Luck, Liam

I have read many many posts about retiring to thailand, some people plan it out, find a job, etc etc while others just say F it and pack up and go. I'm definitely not the plan everything down to a minisule detail type, but I don't want to live in poverty in an unknown land. I'm about 20 years from saving enuf money to retire, and last time I checked there aren't many high tech companies wanting circuit designers in LOS...oh well maybe I should change professions or go play the lottery lol I remember walking into the airport with thin white duke and he commented on how cool I was considering it was my first time leaving LOS, but I guess it just didn't hit me until I came back to this dreadful place as far as hitting the asian massage parlors, I did that a few times and I don't want to pay 6500 baht for 30 minutes of starfish action anymore lol

mzeng: Whatever you do, don't fall in love with a farang. Remember this: A woman marries a man hoping he will change. They never do. A man marries a woman hoping she will not change. They always do.

mzeng, LiamOZ is right on. It sounds like you are in Silicon Valley like me from your travel time. Same thing happened to me. I started working on "the plan" about day 2 in Thailand. I have been working on it since and it has bourne fruit. I think I will build my forst Thai house outside of Kamphaeng Phet early next year. I suggest you start figuring out how to get 10 day trips in too. Because of this I learned that if I take 3 walgreens OTC sleeping pills as soon as I get to 30,000 feet out of Taipei I am good to start work on Monday if I get home Saturday. Or you could just jump in and move there. But I don't like being poor and that was the choice I faced. I figure 3-5 more years here with the little brown almond eyed Mrs... a couple of Luk Krung and there you go. Off to the blissful life of a California/Thai Country Squire... BTW all the girls at the office look like hogs at the trough to me now. I couldn't be bothered with them since the 1st trip either. They sense it too...I have noticed a distinct lack of BS emanating from the "fairer" sex at the office. I think there must feel like a top-heavy up old SUV pulling up next to a Ferrari at the stoplight everytime they see a TG.

Companies are always looking at ways to reduce R&D expense and Thailand is 20% of USA on engineering labor rate.
