I will be in thailand for 35 days coming from USA. Am I required to purchase a visa in addition to my passport? If so, would anyone know where and how much? - Thanks

You will get a tourist visa for 30 days. You can get a new visa by leaving the country and coming back in again, or I believe you can renew the standard 30 day tourist visa for an extra 30 days, but I'd be damned certain to check on that. If you overstay then you'll get fined an amount per pay of your overage.

You can get a 60 day visa from the embassy in the US. Go to their website for further info.

Thailover, You can get a 10 day extension to your 30 day tourist visa for 500THB, and one passport photo at Thai Immigration on Soi Suan Plu. A five-day overstay probably won't land you in hot water at the airport (you must pay the fine), but being caught on the street with an expired visa will DEFINITELY ruin your day. You may end up in Immigration Detention, and be deported with PNG status. So, either get the 60 day visa BEFORE you leave, or apply for the extension before your 30 days are up. The extension is cheaper, but you may spend a few hours getting it done. haam sup

But if you dont want to bother doing that, just pay 200 Baht penalty at the airport for each day that you overstayed

I can't agree with Smegma on this one. I have heard of some bro's getting caught with an expired Visa while still on the street. They went to jail for short stint (a few days) I wouldn't even want to go for a few hours. Better pay the couple hundred and get an extention. Or get a 90 day visa. Al

Couple of points and couple of questions. With U.S. passport, you are entitled to 30 days upon arrival, but the way the thais count them it ends up more like 28-9. So for 35 days you are likely to be 7 days tardy, not 4 or 5. Have applied and received the 60 day visa while in the states, at the time the consulate in NYC insisted that I show up in person so if you are not near an issuing point it might be a pain in the ass to get this. Last time left LOS 3 days "late", had to pay the 600 baht, no hassles. The questions--Anyone have an idea at what point are you going to get in trouble with immigration? If you are supposed to be out on say the 1st and you get stopped on the street and you can show them a departure scheduled on the 2nd is this going to be a problem? How strict are they "on the street" and/or at the airport?
