My friend just booked this for March, it is an awesome way to come to BKK from NY, he got the nonstop JFK-HKG flights on the outbound and the return, with good connection to BKK on the outbound and a 1-day stopover for fun in HKG on the return. His fare was $686 tax included!

Damn and I just moved to seattle for six months from LA and then moving back to NYC. oh well, i'll keep searching and see what happens in the next few weeks...tryin to leave here on the feb. 17ish and return mar. 3rd. hopefully as it gets closer to the date that prices may drop, I figure its better for them to sell a ticket cheap than to have an empty seat. congrats on getting cheap tix...lucky dog.

This is not a good deal as you don't get frequent flyer miles. I can book United for $695+ taxes from Philly or Newark and get miles. Edit in: I've flown CP, NWA, SQ, Thai, UA to BKK and the level of service back in the cheap seats is all the same. SQ & Thai have prettier stews. Last trip I flew Thai and the food was a cut or two above UA swill.

United economy is not as good as CX, IMO. The CX also is nonstop NYC-HK, also free stopover in HK if you have friends there (which I do), not to mention HK is one of the nicest airports I have been to. Sure, 3 X 20K FF miles gets you a free economy ticket on UA, but I would rather save the approx $100/trip three times and use the $300 towards another $600 CX ticket due to level of service, flight time, etc. Maybe different if you are doing 3 trips a year and hitting UA ff membership levels, but once a year I would go CX. I'd love to jump on this, but my last experience with Cathay was horrible, mostly due to the size (width) of their seats, and the total and utter lack of legroom. Good price, though, as prices go.

CX economy seats are tight, the pitch is 32 inches, I think. But the service is great, and they have baskets of sandwiches, and cookies/candy for snacking all night long. One of the benefits of their schedule though is a midmorning arrival in BKK, so you can get checked into your hotel and head out for your oily massage or Soi 7 Beer Garden freelancer to take the edge off the trip. Plus with the 1AM takeoff from LAX you can work that day and head right out, saving a vacation day for LOS

To expand on the post above, from another board: UA economy is not as good as CX, IMO. I'm not the only one that thinks so: http://www.airlinequality.com/Airlines/CX.htm http://www.airlinequality.com/Airlines/UA.htm The listed seat pitch on CX (32") is better than UA (31"). PTVs, better food, hotter FAs on CX. Bring you drinks until you climb onto the beverage cart and start slinging your own poop. Potential 50-YO union slag with cankles and bad attitude on UA with likely not as good of service. The CX is nonstop NYC-HK, which is huge in my opinion. Pop a few pills and you can eat up almost the entire trip sleeping in one seat. With CX you go nonstop to HK, 1.5 hours layover for maybe a quick shower, and then 2.5 hours onto BKK. Total flight/layover time 21 hours. With UA, you go to Narita (not a big fan of that airport, BTW) after a plane change on the way, then Narita to BKK, total flight time 26 hours. Five hours more, not to mention the hassle of switching planes. Correct me if I am wrong BigD on this, as you are more familiar with UA than I am. Also free stopover in HK on CX if you have friends there (which I do). HK is one of the nicest airports I have been to and like to grab a shower and beer there, so if I had to pick a transfer point it woul probably be that one. Again, I like to get the lions share of the trip out of the way by sleeping and only have 2.5 hours instead of the 6 (?) from Narita. With CX I could almost work a half-day and save some of our sparse US vacation time as it leaves 2:45 pm, while UA is 9:45 am meaning a whole vacation day shot instead of half (and with my company I could probably not even have to take any time that day). Sure, 3 X 20K FF miles gets you a free economy ticket on UA, but I would rather save the approx $100/trip three times and use the $300 towards another $600 CX ticket due to level of service, flight time, etc. I heard a few rare bad things about CX, but much more good things especially as compared to domestic (US) carriers. Consider that the first time I flew them (this particular deal in fact), they upgraded us to business HK to BKK just because I mentioned my friend had a back operation at check in at JFK. Do you think that would happen if you were a no FF status on UA? It may be different situation (like yours) if you are doing 3 trips a year and hitting UA ff membership levels. Also, maybe you don't mind the extra five hours or time off work as a retiree. But if you are going one or two times a year, or maybe just getting a cheap option if not going with your usual FF carrier, IMO it definitely IS a good deal and I would go CX hands down over the UA flight.

You can't beat Cathay Pacific Service & Food. But the economy seats are very tight (width) for your typical westerner and the Trans Pacific Filghts are always full. Cathay Pacific Economy Seating on a full flight is comparable to a 13 Hour slave Ship Seating Experience! You dare not eat the snacks, they'll have to use a crowbar to get you out of the seat. I used to always fly CX. Because of tight seating on CX, I switched to EVA Deluxe.
