I originally considered booking my flights to Siem Reap once I got to BKK (I'm from the US) in mid-Dec. My Siem Reap visit would be on Dec 18-20 with little flexibility. Since it's peak season and flights are already filling up on the Bangkok Air website, any suggestions for local BKK travel agents that can setup a Discovery Pass for me and book my flights before I arrive in BKK? Apparently this is a good strategy to save some money on an otherwise expensive flight. Thanks!

Personally I am REALLY pissed off about the Bangkok airways monopoly on the route and the HUGE price,,,,,so I have been checking alternatives,,,,,,
BKK to Phnom phen 999BHT +taxes http://www.airasia.com
Phnom phen to Siem reap by air-con taxi 1500-1800BHT,
AHHH so not only do you get a day or two in Phnom phen ( night life there is great) you save money.

Asianluver, I have no knowledge about december being fully booked or not, but my guess is that there is no problem finding a seat. I would say just shop around a bit. Walk into some agents near your hotel (Sukhumvite area???) just for the fun of it. Get some prices and notice they mostly have big thai airline names and big prices ofcourse.
Then go to Khao San Road and shop around there. They will have cheaper cambodian airlines for you. I think you will not find more travelagent per square yard as in Khao San Road. I also think most are just francises of one or two real travelagents, so I think you can play around there. Just say his neighbor is cheaper and watch what happens. The best deals can be made here I think.
Some tips : Keep a 3 day margin in your shopping. 1 day for shopping, 2nd day for picking up and paying for your ticket and 3rd day for flying. I know it can be faster, but this will give you a relaxed and worryless agenda. (This is ofcourse when planes are not fully booked.)
My advice would be to take 3 days to see the temples, 1 day to see the lake and it's floating village, and the first and last day for travel and seeing Siem Reap. This also can be done quicker ofcourse, but there you have that word RELAXED again.
Girls in Siem Reap can be had from Martini's or some brothel's a taxi will bring you to. My advice would be don't do an ST inside a brothel unless you wear a biohazard suite.

If you pick a not top of the range hotel I guess you don't need to book in advance. There will always be room at the inn, even in december.

Do you read??? As I said in my previous post " The Siem Reap - BKK route is a MONOPOLY ( not the board game with dice) belonging to BKK Airways!!!!!.
Your suggestion to go to Khao san road goes against nearly EVERY piece of information I have gathered about travelling from Thailand to Cambodia!!!!!!
So some very VERY bad advise given,, but maybe you had just had a brain explosion?

Sorry, you could be right with the monopoly thing. I did go by bus to Siem Reap. And having been there and done that, I have no need to fly to Siem Reap again. So I have no firsthand knowledge of FLYING to Siem Reap. From experience I know my advice is true atleast for the BKK - PP tickets.

You must have eaten the entire yaba production of a year in one sitting if you think that Khao San Road does not cater to the cheap travellers to CAMBODIA.
But I guess you made a slip of your keyboard there.
So my post should be read as a bit more general on travel to Cambodia, where as your general remark should be read as a specific Siem Reap remark.
Having said that I still think I have seen signs on the walls in Khao San Road that there were a lot of ways of going there, with/without flying, with/without hotel, with/without tours + guides.
So checking this place out for a better deal is not wrong advice. Even airlines with a monopoly have cheap and expensive tickets.
Since you have a f***ed-up personality (Mel Gibson - Russel Crow) and you are from down-under you may not have heard of the business concept of small dealers with small overhead can be able to price the same product cheaper then big dealers with big overhead.
And since my advice was SHOP AROUND, and not buy your ticket from Joe Scamm on Soi Sukmedik 69, my advice was good; whatever you say.

Could you explain this???? Go to sukhumvite travelagent and ask for a planeticket BKK - PP the cheapest I found was 9.000 baht. Most were over 10.000 baht. Now go to Khao San and there you will get your ticket for 5 - 6 K baht. Seems to me half price is a rip off in your part of the world (See D) personaly I think it is a good deal. And since they deliver I have trouble seeing the rip-off here. If you mean that you like to travel in luxury, well you pay half the price, what do you expect????????

easy fellas - didn't intend to stir up such a ruckus.
(1) siem reap visit dates are set, 12/18-12/20
(2) bus is not an option due to time constraints (plus i've done my research and the potential tour group scam isn't worth the cost savings)
(3) would prefer not to pay bangkok air website prices
Should I wait until I'm in BKK until booking and risk a sell-out since it's peak season or should I try to book it in advance? Any recommendations on travel agents in BKK that I can use to book a Discovery Pass?

1) Ok set dates so better book ASAP. ( LIKE TODAY)
2) Bus is stupid way to go anyway, so definately fly at least to Phnom Phen. ( Blattsuckman please note he has researched and found the Khao San road rip-off)
3) Yes Bangkok airway monopoly is unreasonably priced.
I would not wait,, as previously suggested do,,,,
1) Book flight BKK - Phnom Phen at http://www.aiasia.com price one way is 999BHT ( plus taxes),, visa on arrival no problem (take twp passport type photos with you).
2) If you do not want a day or two in Phnom Phen then immediately find a taxi to take you to Siem Reap ( Taxi total should be 1600-1800BHT), if want cheaper find someone to share with. Travel from Phnom Phen to Siem Reap about 4 / 5 hours.
This should see you sitting in your Angkor hotel only some 7/8 hours after checking out of your BKK hotel, all reasonably comfortable and without overpaying.
3) Recommend booking return flight same way (also book that now to assure the good price) http://www.asiaair.com.
I know very little about the details of the "air-pass" but am sure it will be more expensive than above travel suggestion.
Most importantly AVOID all land-mines and Blattsuckers, they have similiar IQ's and running into them will have the same effect on your holiday plans.
