It is not often I get really hot and irritated. But this is one time. And sure - I know this warning will be responded by some readers who ONLY look at price and nothing further. Ok - fine - but I feel I must give the report that is: dont fly AIR ASIA! I did just recently and I must say they really rank among the "banana carriers". Service is non-existant - which someone then can say is because they are cheap. Yes - the are, in every meaning of the word! Since my ordeal with them today on a simple flight from Udon to Bangkok I realise that the proverb "you always get what you pay for" is more true than ever! They were 3 hours late without even appologising for it. They charge overweight from 15 kg!!! I hade to cough up almost 1000 B for me and GF luggage that weighed in at exactly 40 kg´s - which at any other airline is the normality! But with this kwack-airline they put it at 15 kg´s and hope to chip in! Crap! I had a rather heated talk with the lowlife that called himself station manager and of course he did no effort to set it straight. The worst thing of all is that I found out that they ARE NOT MEMBERS of IATA which I would say is an absolute must for anyone wanting to fly with some concern for their safety! Again - only carriers like air cuba and similar are not there and their safety records are the worst in the world. I did not expect a thai carrier to be so low in standards but AIR ASIA obviously is. For instance they fly old wornout 737 2oo and 300 which of course are outsourced by more serous carriers. So as an old pilot myself I would strongly recommend all bro´s to avoid this crap airline and instead choose NOK AIR or Thai or any other transporter that meats international standards and requirements. NOK AIR is a totally different story and also a subsidiate to Thai Airways and as such well secured. Add a few baht and you fly in comfort at their Nok Plus service and can bring 30 kg of luggage! Sure - there will always be people prepared to fly a Bleriot 1909 model if the price is 50 baht one way- but for me I value safety higher and Air Asia is never to choosen again!

Jojje, And it goes downhill from there. My partner in crime recently took an Air Asia flight from BKK through KL to Singapore (or was it the other way around, I forgot). It was two legs, both on Air Asia. The AA flight was late getting off the ground and late arriving at the midway point. When he got to the counter to try to get on the next leg, the plane had already left. So he did what any passenger would do, asked them to put him on the next plane out. "No can do!" was the response, unless he coughed up extra cash! Turns out, their policy is, unless you purchase their AA flight insurance, they won't book you for missed flights, even when it's their fault and their planes! So I won't be flying that ratbag outfit anytime soon. - Balls

It seems things have not changed. About two years ago Air Asia's last evening flight to BKK out of Singapore was so consistently late that I booked the flight and made an "impossible" transit on two separate occasions - this included collecting baggage from arrivals (being a "point-to-point" budget carrier you can't check luggage thru with them) clearing customs and entering Singapore, dashing upstairs to departures and checking in, going thru security and then "leaving" Singapore and ALL after the scheduled departure time. JetStar Asia and Tiger are much better and I don't doubt safer for around the same price but the "bastards" nearly always depart on time - Enjoy. Edit in - there were no other flights to BKK at that time of night - it was worth gambling the airfare to avoid a stop-over.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Monday 18 December 2006 :- AirAsia engine deal =============== AirAsia has signed a US$500-million contract with CFM International for 80 CFM56-5B engines plus six spares to power its Airbus A320 aircraft. The Malaysia-based carrier has 40 Airbus A320 passenger jets on order and options to purchase as many as 30 more. AirAsia has also signed an engine service agreement with General Electric for the maintenance, overhaul and repair of the engines The 20-year agreement is worth about $1.1 billion.

Air Asia's luggage limit are published and enforced. It would be nice if they were more lenient but they are not. One of the reason fares are low is because Air Asia carries lots of cargo. I know I posted this in a previous thread on this airline. BTW, http://www.flyertalk.com is also a good source for information and reviews on carriers. Also, it is made very clear in their contract of carriage that no changes can be made because of late interline connections that cause you to miss the flight. And this is also true for connections Air Asia to Air Asia. I think this is true for almost all low-fare airlines, the current Nok Air policy is "If you fail to check in on time or fail to board the aircraft by the time the aircraft departs, the fare you paid will not be refunded to you for any reason whatsoever." So check the terms and limits carefully. There is a reason the fares are so low on these airlines. Personally, I would not make a connection to or from any of these airlines, as "connections" are something that they have no provision or planning for. This is by design.

I'm with Colorado guy here. You get what you pay for. Budget airlines are cheap, you pay the price you take your chances. Its 15Kg - same as Nok Air (unless you pay for Nok Plus. Everyone knows - it is clearly published. They use cargo to subsidize the flights, so that's how they stay cheap. As for delays - they are unfortunate, but again are a result of keeping costs down. No spare planes, small technical teams, etc. When I last booked with Nok they cancelled the flight (note, not delay, cancelled) and I used Air Asia instead. If you want better service ratings, book Thai, and pay the price. Otherwise, chill, have a beer, and take less stuff with you.

Has nothing to do with reliability of the engines - that's a pretty average spare part percentage. Unlike that 3 full planes fail at the same time.

Report from The Nation dated Thursday 21 December 2006 :- Thai AirAsia to start Langkawi flights on Jan 6, 2007 ====================================== Thai AirAsia will operate Bangkok-Langkawi as its 10th international destination and start flying to the Malaysian island on January 6. The airline will serve the route every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Flights from Bangkok will depart at 2.15pm while flights from Langkawi will depart at 5.30pm (local time). Tassapon Bijleveld, chief executive officer, announced the opening of the route to the media in Kuala Lumpur yesterday. "We look forward to expanding our reach to Langkawi because of the growing tourism appeal towards the island, especially for tourists visiting Bangkok. As a tourism hub, Bangkok brings in millions of tourists every month. These tourists are always interested in visiting neighbouring destinations, and Langkawi is among their favourite destinations," Bijleveld said. "We will start flying to Langkawi this January with three flights a week, but this route has the potential to have daily flights six months after its opening." The airline offered 1,000 seats with a zero-baht airfare (exclusive of taxes and other fees) to announce the opening of the route. It continues to offer low fares to guests wishing to fly between the cities. Langkawi will be Thai AirAsia's fourth destination in Malaysia, besides Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Kota Kinabalu. Its other international destinations are Singapore, Hanoi, Phnom Penh, Yangon, Xiamen and Macau. It also flies within Thailand to Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Hat Yai, Krabi, Narathiwat, Phuket, Surat Thani, Ubon Ratchani and Udon Thani.

I flew on Air Asia recently. Lovely flight, couldn't ask for better service. When I arrived at the airport, an Air Asia representative immediately helped me with my luggage and then personally guided me to the gate. As I was waiting, an Air Asia waitress, brought me a Singha Beer. I relaxed in a private waiting area, sipping beer and eating several snacks they had prepared for waiting passengers. When I boarded the plane, I was struck by how new everything looked. The new Air Asia planes are state of the art, each seat with a video screen and choice of first run movies. This time, when the stewardess came by, I ordered and glass of 1990 Chateau Margeaux. The flight was very comfortable as Air Asia has the most leg room in the business. The onboard meal of Filet Mignon, french cut green beens and chocolate mousse dessert was what one would expect at a 5 star rated steak house. Supurb. When I arrived at the destination gate, an Air Asia employee helped me with my carry on luggage, picked up my checked baggage and brought it all the way to my waiting limo, which was complimentary from Air Asia. I can't praise Aisr Asia enough for being what all airlines should be. I can't wait for my next Air Asia adventure!
