I have to say when i'm in Bangkok I use the taxi's all the time and only once I had a problem, That was from the airport and not wanting to put on the meter, So overall to me Bangkok Taxi service is very good.

I don't buy that report for one second.
Travel media organisations are just feathering their nest.
London cabbies are nortiously shocking, arrogant and overpriced.
But being low and behold at the top (for the 2012 games ) doesn't suprise me....big destination.
Bangkok taxis are cheap but hardly no fuss
But agruing about meter or ""no meter"" and all the other shit like ""where you stay...I know good hotel...here my card for tour etc "" after a plane ride it's not easy to be polite too long.
It certainly isn't world class protocol.....and is laughable its ranked in the top 500.
You don't annoy your customers you make limited polite chat for a few seconds and shut up and drive, and let them relax.
3rd world countries don't seriously get consideration....in any proper poll.
Money gets in their way too often.
I arrive in Sydney the f***ers nail you for a hundred bucks but don't hassle you.
For instance in Australia Melbourne taxis ( ranked ninth here) would not be as friendly as say Perth...or Brisbane...
But they rate ninth in world....sorry that's incorrect.
And I seriously doubt an Argentian cabbie would be world class.
I think anyone who takes that survey serious deserves to be sold some magic beans.

Having just seen Scam City - Buenos Aires where most taxis return or scam with fake money, I am sure these results are crooked.

Why? My general experience with Bangkok taxis is the same.
- inexpensive.
- friendly.
- quick.
The noted rip-offs of 'no meter', or taxis refusing to accept fares are in the minority of experiences.

That may depend on where you get them. In some places, I have to flag down at least 10 taxis before one will take me to my destination.

That can be the case quite abit if trying to catch a taxi on the wrong side of the road, where they would have to turn around to go your direction. I have had to cross the street a number of times to finally get a taxi that would take me.
I have only had two bad experiences in taxis, and one was a different problem. He had the flu, and his coughing in the taxi passed it on to me, and I in turn passed it on to the whole of the West coast of the USA(the CDC infection mapping confirmed this). It is a complicated story, but is true.
The other bad experience involved a driver trying to take me to the airport instead of home, and attempting to charge me the bt320 on the meter for his mistake when we finally got to my apartment. I know the fare, and gave him only that much.
He tried to get all huffy, and actually got out of the taxi when I got out, but got right back in when he saw I towered over him by a good 8", and more importantly when my friendly property security guard was right there walking toward him ready to get involved.
The other bad experience was happening to get a taxi that had gotten off the internet software that modified the meter to charge at double the normal rate. There was no recourse on that at all, and we were later told by another driver how, and where the software is available. He did mention that very very few drivers do that as the penalty if they are caught is very bad. The mafia drivers don't even use it.
Other than that I have found the taxis here a pleasure to use, and can see why they got such a high rating. Most of them are very honest, and helpful. They keep their taxis clean, and are surprised with more than a few baht tip.

The survey is not real.
Bangkok does not have the fifth best taxi service in the world.
There would be a thousand cities where it's extremely unlikely you would routinely get told the price without a meter running...and get a range of questions etc.
Sure I like Bangkok taxis because they are cheap...and usually my sex life is on a high or about to be when I am in one.
But please don't confuse the pleasantness of a majority with belief that their whole rating is exceptionally so good it's world 5th best.
A lot of Bangkok taxi drivers would face jail in 1st world countries for some of their practices....
And though in general many deserve reward via a tip...some deserve stun gunning too.

Aha! That explains my recent experience, where the meter was running, but a regular trip that usually was 50-60 Baht ended up showing 161 Baht on the meter, and I observed the meter ticking up every 45 seconds or so - much too fast.
Didn't really matter, as upon arriving at the hotel I gave the hotel security 60 Baht for the taxi, and explained "Soi 4 to Hotel" to put it in context. All I hear was the security guard yelling at the taxi driver as I walked away.
Helps to tip the security guards regularly when staying at a hotel.

I like those Pattaya police station scenes for ( pattaya news ) Tv with the victims always pointing at the criminal for the camera.
The voice over is an English south London accent with slight polish and clarity that betrays his ""back off a truck heritage""

I placed my belt around his neck from behind and told him to pull over and put his hands on the dash or I would strangle him like a chicken....pulling hard to make my point.
He wasn't going to f*** with me and did so.
It was early into the trip....
He had changed his tune big time by now and promised me a quiet trip.
But I didn't trust him...and buckled his neck to the neck rest from behind tightly til his eyes started to pop and he was gasping.
I demanded he put weapon on seat next to him.
Which turned out to be a knife after all.
I didn't want my prints on it so told him to throw it out of his window.
Which he did.
Then I said "" now you make big noise again can die? ""
He agreed to absolutely no problem.
At the other end as I had him dump me at a Soi I could enter walking street instead of hotel...and even tipped him 100 baht.
He had a ticket with a false name on it anyhow....and knew he wasn't legal in any case....plus the cops would have beaten him for 2000 in front on me.
Pattaya cops are a game show of price is right...only the Pattaya end Marfia taxis hold sway...
But even they loose if your happy to trump them.
It's always been who pays the most is telling the truth.
Taxi drivers are not high on the winning stakes
