Nokko..
If you have your 60 day visa good job. If not... You do what you feel is best for you, IF you are a few days tardy AND you make it to the airport....Yes, it is a fine and off you go, no hassels.
BUT
If you are even 1 day late AND you get checked out on the street by the boys in brown or whoever, You CAN get taken to jail. Notice I didn't say you WILL. They COULD let you go since they can see your departure date on the ticket but MIGHT not and actually ... probably not and you COULD go to jail.

Short short short story.
A friend of mine was 2 days late on his Visa, was at the bar, was scheduled to leave the next day. No big deal right? Altogether he would be 3 days late. The boys in brown happened into the bar, ended up asking for his and others Visa's. He was a day or 2 late...off to jail he went for (better sit down) 5 days. HELLO???? 5 days for being 1 or 2 days late. He missed his flight (since it was the next day and all) and had to pay 700 bucks extra once he got to the airport.
Like I said, If you think you can squeek by and be ok, cool, go for it. If you have your 60 or 90 day, no worries.

As far as the guys trying to squeek by I agree that they PROBABLY won't get pinched.
I also pay my car insurance, but really don't plan on getting into an accident. Just a thought.

When I'm in Thailand, I never carry my passport. I carry a copy of the face page. I will start to carry the visa page. Who needs the hassle? So far, I've never been stopped or checked.     18 days

I too keep a copy of the face page with me at all times in all countries. The copy will also come in handy at the embassy if you happen to have the passport stolen.

I have been to Thailand at least 50-60 times and have always left my passport in the hotel and have never been asked for it.
I must have been lucky!
What happens if you are stopped and you do not have any id on you?????

Probably already mentioned, but good info at http://www.thaivisa.com -  check the tourist visa forum, I posted some info there on the run to aranyaprahthet, not difficult, maybe 7-8 hours total there and back, easy car or Bus trip, but beware the cons/hassles from the Cambodian side, do everything [ form filling in etc. ] yourself, and just pay 1000 bt for the visa, and 100 bt to have yourself stamped in - ignore the mongrels who ask you for 2000bt and/or want to fill out forms for you, or the guy at the departure window, who will ask for 200 bt -  of course you can get a 10 day extension to your 30 day Visa for 500 bt from soi Suan Pluu, Silom.

My understanding is that if you were stopped and didn't have your ID on you, then they might take you back to your hotel to check your ID.  But they also might haul you off to detention.

once was stopped by police for a stupid traffic violation... and by pure bad luck i had left my wallet with all IDs in the office (which by good luck was about 4 blocks away).

i acknowledged that i had done something wrong but that because i was in a rush, i would appreciate if the officer would let me pay the fine right then right there (wink wink). he asked me for an amount that i thought was too much so i asked why so much. he said that because they were 2 infractions, the original one and the 2nd one which was not having any id. to this i replied that becuz my office was so near, i would leave the car there and walk to get my id so that i would only have to pay 1 fine. police officer being so helpful said that he trusted me and that he would make it easier for me thus reducing the fine by half, but said that if i was really in a rush i could just give him the money and he would take care of paperwork later becuz if i wanted a receipt it would take a lot of time for the paperwork (wink wink).

it only cost me a small fine -even after not having any papers

P.S. i had money to pay the fine - i do not carry cash in my wallet but on another separate small bill folder. this way it is more unlikely that i loose (forget) both
