Imac, any trip report yet?
I have seen the Phuket 747-200s at Don Muang parked up. 2 of them. They looke no older than the planes Thai Airways have been running up until recently.
Thai took delivery of 2 more 747-400s last week, barnd new with modern facilities. The worst national airline of a moderately wealthy country I have flown in Asia. I spit on them and their corruption.

finally got to check out the phucket air flights with my trusty travel agent
they quote £449 + taxes which put it in the thai airways range
some how I dont think I will go with them unless they drop there price by quite a bit

How do you call Thailand wealthy and why do you call their airline the worst in Asia.

I was comparing to other nearby Asian countries.
Thailand is wealthy compared to its neighbours and Toxin assures me it is an economic powerhouse of Asia. Its national airline is also one of the longest established and a founding member of Star Alliance.
And yet when I compare Malaysian, Singapore (a very small country) and Thai airlines along with Bangkok Airways etc. and even Myanmar Airlines I can definitely draw a comparison.
Thai aircraft are crap. On some of their 747s there is a business class cabin on the lower deck. In this cabin there is a wall along the right hand side (First class galley behind). They expect top dollar for a seat next to a minging wall. No window, no view, no discount. Passengers fight not to get these seats.
Most of their old aircraft do not offer in seat entertainment. They still have screens at the end of the cabin which may or may not work. This went out 10 years go in business class on real airlines.
The food is sh_te. How can you ruin the Thai creative flair for cooking? Employ Thai airways catering department.
Thai do not serve alcohol on domestic flights. They axed this to save money, the fares did not change.
I could go on but I trust you get my drift. Until Thai radically rethinks its approach to service and customer centred marketing on International routes I will continue to fly through KL or Singapore to use real airlines with modern planes.
Domestically I will try budget carriers but I prefer Bangkok Airways and will continue to fly them whenever possible.

And did I also mention their lounges are crap?????
The food is a selection of unappetsiing sandwiches, greasy curry puffs or nuts.
The drinks consist of a few local beers (OK) but the spirits are the cheap crap you may find in Nana. the coffee is horrible. The lounge itself is invariable cheaply built and lacking in service. This applies in Don muang, their flagship lounge, and at Thai lounges across Asia.
When I use the Singapore lounge of Singapore Airlines I have quality the whole way. A selection of hot meals, Tiger on tap, Internet broadband access free of charge etc. I check in hours early to have a cheap night out in the lounge.
Why can't Thai produce anything like this in Don Muang???? The answer appears to be because they couldn't give a sh_t about the passenger.

BKK banger you're awful bitter but I understand the feeling. I share the sentiment you have towards Thai with United Airlines. I was coming home from a year in Korea and was delayed in DC long enough to have taken a cab into town and taken the train up to NY before I even boarded my flight. I kind of wished I did that. It's no wonder United is bankrupt.
On the opposite end of the spectrum is JAL. I was in Tokyo waiting for a connecting flight and was delayed 1 hour. Not being a Japanese speaker I learned this by following the crowd of people that was forming in front of the boarding gate counter. I received a 1000 yen coupon for use in any airport restaurant for the "inconvenience" I encounterd. How refreshing. Any American airline would have told you you're being delayed and kicked you in the shins.
Well with only a one hour delay I'd only have 1/2 hour to use the coupon minus 15 minutes to get to the front of the line before boarding so I went to the nearest kiosk and bought 3 beers at 300 yen a pop and had a nice bubbly flight to Okinawa. Everyone should study the Japanese when it comes to customer service IMHO.

Yes, I'm bitter.
Thai are no cheaper than other airlines but the service level has reached an all time low. It has gotten so bad I would even take BA over them.
Let us see if th enew aircraft and facilitiesat Suvaranbhumi will lift them up. However they will have to rethink how they do business and not run the airline for the staff, senior management and VIPs and screw the rest.

I received a 1000 yen coupon for use in any airport restaurant for the "inconvenience"
this is standard IATA practice if an airline delays you by a set period you are entitled to a meal coupon it usually only covers the cost of a sandwhich and a soft drink I think the value is set at USD 2.5
had this from various airlines before (sometimes they dont advertise the fact and you have to ask) but if you realy want to moan about how national airlines mangle thier food
i have been flying airtialia to milan for the last 2 months and bearing in mind you could argue that itialian food is the best in europe you get some sort of processed meat in a roll that tastes like sh_t
its so bad that I no longer fly direct to milan I would rather fly lufthansa to dussedorf and wait 3 hours for a connection to milan
nice touch there airside is free tea and coffee plus free newspapers in various languages
