The airport bus is good. Its only 100 baht and takes you right to most of the hotels. If you want a real public transportation experience, there is an airconditioned bus that goes from the airport to the bts. From there, you take the bts to Sukhumvit. I forget the bus number. The cost ends up being about the same.

It will take you through the airport to the correct taxi stand and give a newbie all the help you need. I used it on my first trip and it is great.

If you want the train you need to come out of the terminal and cross the highway by the footbridge.

The train station is on the other side.

The train should be a few baht (I suspect around 15 Baht) and will take you right into Hua Lamphong.

The MRT entrance is on your right and you will slip from the 19th into the 21st century through a graceful addition to the SRT building.

At the moment the fare is 10 Baht to Sukhumvit from Hua Lamphong. This will rise to about 25 Baht.

With the change left over you could wash down the dirt and replace the sweat with a beer or two.
