UA is always going to cost more than the other carriers as well as have more restrictions on the tickets but if you have FF status with them then it is worth the premium.

I've been earning and burning miles on AA myself, but Ex TX, UA is often the cheapest and is still showing seats at $767 after tax. According to Travelocity, that's the lowest fare. Eva shows up as a close second, but fails to ticket as always.

Hey POP - no offense mate - but I see more like $2200 for a one year validity - open return - LAX BKK LAX.

Can you post the link to that fare?

Appreciate it.

I think you're comparing apples and oranges. Where did I say this was an unrestricted open return ticket? I don't even bother to price such tickets. Most of the tickets I buy are one-use deep discount tickets that cannot be modified without a change fee and paid upgrade to the next available fare class.

Locking my travel to specific dates, which my employer would expect of me anyway, allows me to buy tickets near $700 ($800-$850 after taxes and surcharges) from TX & NY. I have yet to fly from the west coast, but I would expect the same fare class to run $550-650 pre-tax from CA or WA based on previous queries.

With all due respect - I don't see an apples to oranges comparison. $700 is what Eva quote for the ticket I mention.

Can see now why a punter on another thread says the airline wants him to pay US$ 1000 to change his return date >>>> CROOKS.

Can you please elaborate on what you mean by "EVA won't ticket as usual"?

Do you mean they publish fake low fares? That would seem to be illegal on the face of it.

Thanks.

Japan Airlines LAX-BKK on 01/13/04 for $700 from Star Travel 5112 Hollywood Blvd, Hollywood 323-644-1063

I've used them a lot in the past and have found there fares as low as expedia/travelocity.

Like Big D I'm a UA Premier Exec and am interested in earning miles to maintain the status. With UA I get double miles, with Star Alliance partners I get less but they still count. Unfortunately for me many of the airlines suggested above (JAL, CX, EVA) aren't part of the Evil Empire--err, I mean Star Alliance. To add insult to injury, some of you are getting SFO and SEA fares in the $700's but I still can't get less than high $900's from LAX for my specific dates--which is likely part of the problem to begin with.

On the otherhand I see a fare of $597 to HKG on UA. Hmm...

Sites like Travelocity list the fares without knowing (before you attempt to ticket) whether there are actually any seats available at that fare. This is not illegal. It is a limit of the technology and the existing reservation systems they must access to list all the fares.

UA's fares are really off the charts at times but when you figure that with 2x miles you are accumulating to and from BKK, a first class domestic award ticket as well as upgrade certificates, it really is not a bad premium to pay. In addition you can actually USE your UA miles for award trips not only on UA but on the other Star carriers.

If u make 1K then you get get even more upgrade certificates that can be used on intl flights.

My preferrred carrier to Asia is CX but I am a mileage and perks whore, so I stick with UA.

1. -> That’s a good price for a open return IMO, even in Y from WC.
2. -> Airlines are indeed crooked, but not because they sell restricted tickets.
3. -> On Travelocity only (so far), the Sabre system seems to have a hard time ticketing certain flights. In the case of these Eva fares, there are a few issues. One is that it requires interlining because Eva does not fly out of my starting city directly. Interlining seems to confuse Travelocity under certain conditions. Also, Travelocity has issues with some flights that cross the international dateline. So, I’ve gotten all sorts of odd errors, like “The connecting flight is invalid” and “Eva does not provide service from XXX to YYY on the day you have selected” (regardless of the actual date). Most of the time these errors occur after I have gone through the process of finding days when the fare class is still available and just prior to the final payment screens.

4. -> So far I cannot find anything illegal about it. You can’t actually purchase the ticket so either it doesn’t exist or Travelocity is simply shooting themselves in the foot. When I’ve written to ask what the heck is the problem they just don’t seem to care. They seem convinced that it cannot be fixed without using more effort than it would be worth. I would try to book through Eva’s own website except that it’s total crap. You can’t interline from anywhere from what I could tell.

Lately I’ve been reading that some of the international airfare sites (outside of USA) are much better at finding and ticketing deep-discount fares. So I just might try to expand beyond the Travelocity/Orbitz/Expedia/Sidestep systems when I go fishing for my next ticket. Maybe I’ll combine a domestic trip to the west coast with a nice Asian flight on JL/CX/SQ if the price is right. As for Eva, well, I just haven’t heard enough good news about them yet and the open return ticket just won’t help me out much.
