Free upgrades are now going the way of hot American stewardesses. Most upgrades are now handled by an automated computer system prior to check-in and anything else is handled by a gate agent (gate agent will always trump the chek-in agent). You can be nice to the GA and request one if available. Would really help you if you have some sort of elite status with the airline or you are on a high priced ticket, basically full fare coach.
