I was not a fan of their service. I thought the service was pretty bad for an asain airline. The food was not very good either. I just flew them for the first time in a long time this last may.
In regards to safety, I don't think I would be concerned any more than any other airline. The reason to fly China is the price, and also from the west coast you can leave around midnight and land in the morning or afternoon to many destinations in asia. Just don't expect your own video screen and good service. As long as you are expectations are just to get there, you'll be fine.

No, Daffy, I don't. I just point out their safety record. It speaks for itself. Caveat emptor.
Actually, because their schedule fits well with mine and they have always been willing to accommodate me when I've wanted to extend my stay in los, unlike EVA, Delta, or Cathay Pacific, I have accumulated more miles with China Air than any other airline.
BTW, when you get to Taipei, you don't need a Dynasty Club Card to get into the lounge. All you have to show is a boarding pass.

I read it somewhere that many of the China Airline pilots received almost no training for passenger craft at all before flying them.
The airline for cost reason take the military pilots and put them right in the huge passenger jet to save the cost of training.
Then see what happened: (i got it from airsafe.com from a simple google search)
in the 1990's to now alone:
(1) crash in Nagoya 249 died (1994)
(2) crash nearby Taipei airport 197+7 died on the ground (1998)
(3) crashed and overrun into the ocean at HK airport (1999) 3 died, the plane dangled in the HK ocean for some time
(4) airplane blew up in the air 225 died (2002)
With only a small fleet and crash like that on a regular basis is really scary. Should be the most scariest airline in the world.

I've flown China Airlines four times all from Okinawa to Bangkok with layovers in Taipei (which is a crappy airport to spend a layover in). The flights where fine, the food bearable and the stewardesses were attractive. Worth it for the price.
On one occassion the morning flight out of Naha was cancelled and I waited all day at the airport to find out that the evening flight was canceled too. The excuse was weather or ILS was out, but I kept seeing planes landing left and right. No meal or transportation was offered. I had to inisist on taxi coupons to and from my apartment for the next day. At 2000 yen each way this was important.
So they're an ok airline that will do just enough to keep you happy. I'm sure the pilots involved in the mishaps described aren't flying anymore and that's key because most air mishaps are the result of operator error.

You just do it with such regular fervor and enthusiasm, that it certainly gives the impression that you're on a mission.
I just got in with China Airlines, and both the LAX->TPE leg as well as the final TPE->BKK leg were pleasant and comfortable. The LAX part had one of the newer birds (seems to be less than a year old), while the TPE/BKK portion was on an older 747.
Weirdly enough, while there was no internet service on the LAX/TPE portion, the TPE/BKK part, at 3.5 hrs, had Boeing's Connexxion service offered. I can't quite figure out the criteria of offering the service, seeing as how I would figure it would get more use during the 13 hour flight.

Hey Bros,
I've flown China Air more times than I care to admit, but one thing is for sure, their customer service has improved immensely.
When I first flew in 97' the attendants would lean over me to serve the Chinese, (I'm Caucasion), next to me, completely ignoring me. They'd feign ignorance when I'd say "beer", or something equally as complicated like, scotch and soda, sneer when I'd ask for more ice, like that. In Taipai, the mandatory 4hr to overnight at nasty ass hotel layover like Blackkat said, is a nightmare all it's own. Then they did not take American dollars whatsoever for their oily noodles dishes.
Nowadays, however, they've seem to have tightened up their act. The last two times I've flown, the attendants are pleasant and the layovers are less hours.
Last time I flew buisness, and it was the most relaxing flight I'd ever had. Next flight I'll earn enough miles for a round trip anywhere in Asia. I think I'm going to Katmandu, that's really, really where I'm going too! If I ever get outta here, I'm going to Katmandu.

I wonder if their change in attitude has anything to do with the skyteam alliance? Korean still sets my teeth to grinding since I'm an elite member in skyteam and they make me stand in the "long line" during checkin. Not supposed to be the case when you are in elite level on a skyteam member airline. NWA will also let you not only select your seats when you book the ticket but also pick the choice exit row seats as well. Not so on Korean.
