Airlines co-operate on Hat Yai route
==========================

The low-cost carriers Nok Air and One-Two-Go are cooperating to cut losses on their new Phuket-Hat Yai route. With more than three-quarters of their seats empty, the two airlines have agreed to a code-share arrangement. ''We would be racing toward bankruptcy if we flew separately,'' said One-Two-Go chief executive Udom Tantiprasongchai.

The Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) on May 15 licensed Nok Air and One-Two-Go to separately serve the Phuket-Hat Yai route.

One-Two-Go was to run three flights a week _ Wednesday, Friday and Sunday - using MD-82 aircraft that can carry 172 passengers. Nok Air would use the smaller Boeing 737-400s, with 156 seats.

The code-share arrangement is such that One-Two-Go passengers will travel Nok Air aircraft, meaning that One-Two-Go is not actually flying the route.

Even though only one jet is currently operating, Nok Air can only fill 20-30 seats per flight and has incurred heavy losses.

Industry analysts said a no-frills carrier such as Nok Air must fill about 70% of available seats per flight to break even.

The fuel bill for the B737-400 can be as much as 100,000 baht per hour. Fuel charges make up about one-third of an airline's operating expenses.

Nok Air charges an average of 1,750 baht for a one-way ticket on the route, including surcharges and taxes.One-Two-Go has been trying to persuade the DCA to ease its rules and endorse the code-share arrangement. If the regulator will not allow the arrangement, One-Two-Go may compromise by flying another secondary route _ from Bangkok to Ranong in the south, Mr Udom said.

Meanwhile, Nok Air is watching the poor initial traffic on the Phuket-Hat Yai with some concern and said that it was contemplating abandoning the route.

Nok Air hoping to take on the region - New fleet supports expansion plans
============================================
Nok Airlines, the no-frills carrier partly owned by Thai Airways International, hopes to become a regional player as it nearly doubles its fleet to support international expansion.

The airline, which today inaugurates its first overseas flight from Bangkok to Bangalore, is set to add three additional Indian cities, two Vietnamese destinations and Macao to its regional network.

In Thailand, the airline would add Chiang Rai, Ubon Ratchathani and Surat Thani to the ten current routes and four interprovincial services operated jointly with local commuter carrier SGA Airlines.

Instrumental to the route expansion is the deployment of five more jetliners between now and year-end, bringing its fleet of B737-400s to 11, chief executive Patee Sarasin said.

The airline's overseas expansion is seen as a bid to match those of rival low-cost carriers in Thailand _ Thai AirAsia and One-Two-Go Airlines, which are gearing up to expand their networks in the region in light of a saturated domestic market.

Earlier this month, privately owned One-Two-Go announced the acquisition of 14 McDonnell Douglas MD-80 series jets, bringing its fleet to 22 jetliners next year as it moves to take advantage of surging budget travel.

One-Two-Go is set to fly its first overseas destination to Phnom Penh from its Bangkok hub later this year, before adding Singapore, Malaysia, Bali and Bangladesh.

Nok Air also plans to fly to New Deli, Chennai and Hyderabad, reflecting its intention to cash in on rising budget travel demand between Thailand and India.Nok Air will start daily B737- 400 flights to Chennai in October, adding Hyderabad and Delhi early next year.

These routes are already served by THAI, which could see part of its traffic taken away by Nok Air. But Mr Patee sees its entry to India as complementing THAI by preventing additional competition.

It is also set to begin service to Hanoi and Macao in October, and is working on a timetable to offer flights to Ho Chi Minh City.

''We want to cover Southeast Asia before expanding to medium-haul routes such as Japan,'' said Mr Patee.

This year, Nok Air expects to carry nearly three million passengers, up from about two million last year.

Mr Patee said Nok hoped to become more profitable this year. It earned 130 million baht in 2006, compared to 40 million baht in 2005.

Nok Air adds advanced 737 to expand network
================================

Nok Air's new, advanced 737-800 planes will challenge the image among some flyers that low-cost airlines use outdated equipment.

The budget carrier Nok Air is adding the advanced Boeing 737 800 model to its fleet to support its expanding network including the November inauguration of its second foreign route, to Hanoi.

The announcement is also seen as an attempt to counter the perception that low-cost carriers use old aircraft, in the wake of Sunday's One-Two-Go crash that killed 89 people in Phuket.

The two 737-800s, leased from the British charter airline XL Airways, have been in service for only a few years, compared to an average of more than 10 years for Nok Air's current fleet, consisting of six ''classic'' B737-400 jetliners and one 66-seat ATR-72 propeller plane _ all leased.

The youthfulness of the ''next-generation'' 737 is expected to become a selling point for Nok Air.

The airline hopes moderns plane will address some passengers' safety concerns about travelling on older aircraft used by budget carriers, aviation analysts said yesterday.

The 737-800s, each with a capacity of 190 seats, are due to start flying by the end of next month, which would enable the airline to offer twice-daily flights on the Bangkok-Hanoi route on Nov 1, 2007.

The jets would also be used on Nok Air's two busy southern routes, Bangkok-Phuket and Bangkok-Krabi, in the high season starting at the end of next month.

In the high season, Nok Air, 39% owned by Thai Airways International, also aims to offer two new domestic routes - Bangkok-Chiang Rai and Bangkok-Ubon Ratchathani - at frequencies of twice a day each.

There are also plans to increase flights to other domestic routes to cater to stronger high-season demand.

Nok Air operates five daily flights to Chiang Mai, up to four daily flights to Hat Yai and Nakhon Si Thammarat, three daily flights to Udon Thani and Phuket, two daily flights to Krabi, a daily flight to Trang, two flights per week to Loei and a daily flight between Phuket and Hat Yai.

The carrier started offering daily flights to Bangalore, India, its first international route.

The flight was introduced in May and uses the 156-seat Boeing 737-400, though the cabin load factor is a low 60%.

Nok Air intends to increase its fleet of B737 planes to 11 by the end of this year. Plans are also under way for Nok Air to start flying to New Delhi, Chennai and Hyderabad, as well as to Macau and Ho Chi Minh City.

============================

Thailand's budget carrier Nok Air on Thursday launched twice-daily flights to Hanoi, its second international destination.

Its other overseas destination is Bangalore, India.

any recent experiences on Nok Air ? I'm planning a trip to Phuket from Bangkok and trying to decide on air carriers. I've flown a few times on Air Asia before and had no issue. Looks like I can save about 600 Baht with Nok Air vs. Air Asia on my travel dates. any recent experience/comments about Nok Air or Air Asia would be appreciated. Thx
