On arrival avoid all the touts go for meter taxi quoted 400 + tolls from gal who gave out ticket. Told driver use meter he avoided tolls 300 plus tip.
On return from Suk again meter 250 plus tip no tolls.
And no departure tax, when did that happen?

when I arrived early December I ignored all the touts and just walked past them but one male I heard called me a W***er, I thought of going back and give this man some trouble but with me being a farang and him being a thai, police take his side of the story I only bit my tounge and got out of there, it's just good job he said that to me in Thailand as in my home land in the U.K I would knock his block off.

What is it with Brits and their derivatives and these constant boasts of violence?
...anyway, most of these touts are usually easily silenced by just muttering a couple of words in Thai, or when they quote their insane prices for 'limousine' service (800 Baht and up), just point out what a great price that is for a limo ride to Chiang Rai, and motion to go along for the ride. Oddly, they suddenly are no longer interested in my business (or I get a good-humored smile back, with a motion towards the legit taxi stands).

Always use the meter. What the girl gave you was an estimate based on the fact that YMMV based on where your hotel is, the route taken, and the traffic at that time.
That being said I never paid over 300 BT including the 50 Bt fee, tolls, and a tip for the driver...
