The van and driver deals are a great way to go; especially for upcountry travel. (Even cheaper if you're going with a paying freind or 2.) But I too don't know how much it would be for the average falang; I get mine through connections at 5star hotels.

No comment but look at here http://www.pattayacarrent.net and http://www.vrcarrent.com starting price from 500.- Bath to 1,500.- Bath / day but if you rent a week you can dive free one day or if you rent a month you pay only 18 days and drive free for 12 days. I rented a car and had a small scratch when I returned the car they did not have a surcharge at all. I saw their web seen a university student rent a car from them for month. Anyway call 06-3360080 or 09-8020220 they have a good and very gentle guy can speak very good English Ted

If you want to tour Bangkok then my experience, even though I own cars, is to hire a taxi for the day. My lady has a tame one who is quite happy to putter round all day for 500 Baht plus a donation for fuel used. The advantage is that taxis can hover and get in the way in places where a normal car would be moved on. Hence a trip to the Grand Palace with visitors was smooth and hassle free with our man waiting outside. Parking is not easy in some of these areas and a taxi makes so much more sense.
