6 months seems to be the normal rule, whatever your nationality and wherever you go.

The rule seems to be flexible with some degree of reason in many countries but then there can be a crack down on the rule.

I presume if you do not have a valid passport you may be considered “Stateless” and it could be difficult for any country to expel you.

Turning up at passport control and being refused admission is a bit more than just inconvenient, especially if you have just travelled a long way, or even worse, doing the visa run and get stuck in “no-mans-land “ with no country accepting you!!!

I renewed mine last year; in the UK you can renew your passport up 9 months before it expires so my new passport is valid for 10 years and 9 months, I was also lucky because a few week afterwards the renewal fee of £33 jumped up to £42 for a basic 48 page passport.

"Oh no, I'm not here to renew my passport, as it has more than 6 months before my expiration. My passport, in fact, was stolen, and I need a new one issues, as I have a plane to catch in two weeks."

Done!

Thanks for all the info, guys - I am just getting my paperwork together for a renewal now. My departure date is April 3, so I shouldn't have any trouble with the 6 month-before-expiry thing. My main concern was stories I've heard about how long it can take to get a Canadian passport in our new post-9/11 world, although I suspect some of these stories originate with people who are either applying for the first time (!) or haven't had one for a long time.

It helps to send your forms out through your local MP's office, I did this last time and it goes much faster.

One way or another, I should still be in Nana by midnight on April 5....

The question is can I travel between BKK to HKG over the next two weeks with a passport that expires in 5 months. I have a Non-Imm Visa for Thailand that expires end of July (submitted for renewal) and only plan on being in Hong Kong for less that 10 days. (US passport no visa required for HKG).

I have searched the web but can find no difinitive answer to question of the six months validity issue. Only the US State Dept website says that "some" countries may require six months. Neither the local US Embassy website nor the Thai Embassy website (US based) say anything about needing about six months. The Hong Kong SAR website also neglects to mention anything about it.

Perhaps someone can point me towards a place to find that answer.

Perhaps tomorrow I will change my procrastinating ways.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

I can answer you that quite accurately.

my passport expires 18.08.04

when I entered hk they just gave me the visa up to that date so instead of 90 days I got 81.

so the answer is yes.

Mr Alan
That is interesting about Canada not allowing renewals until 6 months left. I checked the USA Passport website and could not find anything about when you can renew.

I believe that most all airlines will not let you on a flight if you passport does not have at least 6 months left on it, so that may another problem besides the immgration folks of the country you are visiting.

You could always say you lost your passport and get it replaced sooner, but that costs a little bit more than a renewal.

mr alan. please reread my post before you believe... a two and a half month validity was not an issue in both hk and thailand for the airlines (thai) and immigration.
