My last taxi at midnight from the airport to Suk 11 showed about 161 baht on the meter, plus 50 baht if you get it outside the taxi stand at arrivals, plus 80 (I think) for tolls. There is no need to speak Thai and no reason to pay more. Just get in the taxi and go. In about 15 trips, no taxi from the airport has failed to use the meter. No muss, no fuss and I'm usually on my first beer (and BG) about 45 minutes after the wheels of the plane hit the ground!

I have repeatedly had problems with taxis not being able to understand where I am going (when I give them a hotel name). I have given up telling them the hotel name. I just say sukumvit, nana or sukumvit, asoke and then point to the hotels when we get close. If you don't know exactly where the hotel is this could be a problem. Using the regular taxi meter I still got charged like 300 to 350 baht and paid for the tolls to boot. The hassel is a pain after dealing with a 21 hr flight. That why I pay the 650 baht. Everyone speaks good english they take my luggage and I get in a mercedes or mazda 929 or something similiar. They take direct to the hotel never a problem.

Almost every hotel in BKK has a website with the name and address of the hotel in Thai, you can just show that to the driver. Just as a test, yesterday I got into a taxi at the airport and tried to look like a tourist - spoke no Thai. I sweated in the heat, asked the driver (in English) how he was doing, showed him the name of a hotel (in English, not Thai), asked him (in English, not Thai) if he knew where it was. He understood none of my words. Alas, he put the meter on and drove away, even giving me change from the toll. He took me to my hotel, the meter read 137 baht, I gave him money and he gave me change. I did everything I could to see if he would rip me off, but he was not taking the bait. What is this world coming to?

ColoradoGuy, more dangerous than scamming bar girls. Especially for going from airport to hotel, I always use the Taxi stand, not people with Taxi signs. This way, I get to tell the Taxi stand girls exactly where I need to go. I also try to have the address of the hotel/business card of the hotel/just simply tell them to go to NEP first and direct them to where I want them to go from there. One more safety tip, if the driver does not sound like he understands or know where he is going, get out and find another taxi.

DrLove, Cutting off your nose to spite your face!!!!!!!!! Wait to you reach an exit before getting out of cab, you then have a bit more chance of getting another.

UK Punter, I was afraid he couldn't find the exit too! And please leave my perfectly shaped nose intact! It's about the only thing left on my body in such an excellent state.

The one time I gave a taxi at the airport a hotel card (for the bel air princess) he looked at it and then Tried tro talk to me in thai. I tried pointing to the adress written in thai. That didn't seem to help. He wandered off to talk to some of the other people. Came back got ion the cab and drove me to the hotel. As I remember the meter came to something like 300 baht. Not sure why. Got in a cab at posieden to go to Westin Grande. Taxi could not speak or understand a word of english. I just said sukumvit, asoke. He got me to the corner and I pointed to the hotel. Meter was under 50 baht. I hear of guys going to pattaya via meter taxi for 500 baht or something. When I tried it a half dozen taxis refused and drove off. All wanted fixed fare of either 1500 to 2000 baht. I kept saying Pattaya 700 and then later 800 baht. When one finally countered with 1200 baht I said okay and got in. He couldn't find the hotel in pattay even though I had given him the Hotels Business card in Thai. After about an hour of driving around Jomtien. (I kept saying mai Jomtien; pattaya and pointing back to pattaya) he finally stopped another taxi who could speak english. I told him the name of the hotel and he told the taxi driver. Off we went straight to the hotel. I paid the fixed fare we had set in bangkok. I don't know where everyone else finds these taxis. Everytime I get in one it seems like they just left Lao or isaan, haven't even owned a tuk tuk yet and can't read thai let alone understand english. I really think some of the problem has been that some of these taxi drivers can't read. A hotel card in thai doesn't do any good.

sorry to hear about the bad experiences. I do know what you mean though. I once got on a taxi from Suk area and told him to go to Emerald Hotel (so that I can visit MPs in Rachadapisek Rd area). Along with the high volume of after hour traffic, the guy had no idea where it was. He stopped several times along the way to look in a street map that he had. I tried to show him on my MP map from http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sanukmaps, but no help. Took forever but did managed to get there at the end. I'm trying to use the BTS more nowadays, and hopefully the subway when it becomes available later on down the line. 1200 Baht to Pattaya from BKK is about as cheap as you can go. Maybe 1000 if you're really lucky. But you can easily get 800 Baht from many places for taxis from Pattaya to BKK.
