Well, here an example of my trip to my relatives in northern Laos (quite possibly the same as a trip to Issan).
After a seven hours grueling car ride through the most mountainous regions of Laos, we finally ended up in my uncle house. One would think that after 30 plus years that you would get a emotional, heart felt welcoming commitee. Well, you do... except the weclome commitee is nailing you for the "green"... forget Lao Kip... only USD with the Ben's face. Okay, so you felt sorry that they live in such a shabby place and environment so you dish out your hard earn "green." On top of that, they tell you that they're going to throw a weclome feast in your honor.... Little did they told you that since they're tight with their budget... you as the honor guest, would have to pay for the whole feast... that's 1 pig, 1 cow, 30 chickens, 10 kilo of veggies, 100 bottles of soda... the list goes on. And all this in just one day... wow... the next day is another adventure.... But all and all, I guess since we're the forunate one, I didn't really mind dishing out my USD "green" to my relatives. Just as long as they're happy then I'm a happy camper. So they ask when I'm coming back... I told them next year... but in my native tongue... next year mean.... two or three decades from now.
Everyday life is what I had expected... thanks goodness for survival training during my years with the US Army. Sanitary is non existence. I'm still surprise my body survive the water and "dishes" that was served during my stay. Showers?? What's that... so they say... I manage to shower by boiling my own water. Mosquitos are a menace but after a while gotten use to them. Sleeping on the floor with the rodents and pet dogs and cats was a challenge at first but once you show them that you mean business... they leave you alone. One night, my night entertainment was a cat chasing a rat around the house and the cat enjoying the rat as a midnight stack. Red LED does do wonder at night.
But all and all, the experience is nothing that you'll died from nor hate. I'm used to the feeling that I have to pay for everything as being my ethic group, the forunate one is expected to pay. When one is well off, one would have to spread the wealth between the families. When one is not so forunate, then be expecting the other forunate one to spread their wealth to you.... I have yet see this nor in my life time.
So, with the above info... the bros of this forum still recommend that I don't go? Any ruling would be greatly appreciated.

It appears you have known your friend for a very short period of time and you have asked yourself the correct question as to WHY would she ask to go visit her family
It's been pointed out that you would be responsible for the majority of costs etc. and that may not be a big deal. It's just the idea that she/the family may try to milk you big time.
Your trip to visit your own family indicates that is what is expected if you are suspected of having deep pockets.
Another implication could be that you and her have something "special" going on and it could lead to a long-term sponsorship (or expectation of that).
In the West I would be suspicious of being invited to visit the family of a prostitue I just met
I have also had survival training thanks to Uncle Sugar, but now view roughing it as staying in a hotel without cable TV, much less sharing my ear lobes with the rodents.
Don't waste your resourses of time and money on visiting a stranger's family when there are much better things to waste your resourses on in BKK.

Ouch!?! Met the Rayong missus online this afternoon which hadn't happened for ages, got her number in London and called right away... first chat in well over a year and it kindda hurts again...
