Did you know that the French Concorde that took off overweight, that was already veering to the left because of the wheel spacer problem. Almost took-out Jacques Chirac who was in a B747 on a taxiway adjacent to the runway ?

The allegation is that Chirac had priority and Concorde had to change runway !

So, when you have a smooth landing it was probably the computer flying the plane. When you have a bumpy landing, the pilot was probably landing the plane, as he is required to do once out of xx number of flights.



You have it all backwards. The 'bumpy' landings are more likely to come from the auto pilot, which is intentionally set to create 'firm' contact with the runway at a specific location when landing. Human pilots can always adjust the flare and final touchdown point to smooth out the landing whereas the auto-land function will always place the plane down as close to its intended target as possible, even if it means the landing will be a little jarring to the passengers. Also, human pilots are required to use the auto-land function a certain number of times per cycle, not the other way around. Besides these minimums, pilots are also trained to use the autopilot in bad weather because the auto pilot has a lower minimum visibility requirement compared to human-controlled landings. In fact, should a CAT III airport ever enter active service, a modern plane could land itself in zero visibility. Of course there is no auto-taxi function to get the plane to the gate and thus no way to get the plane off the runway once it had actually landed in zero visibility conditions. Instead it would have to be manually towed off the runway. Thus, we still have no active CAT III airports even though there are several that come close.
