Report from Bangkok Post dated Wednesday 26 September 2007 :-

Thai AirAsia promotes youthful fleet
===========================

Thai AirAsia has begun a new campaign featuring its new Airbus A320 jetliner, a move that coincides with public concerns over the use of old aircraft by no-frills carriers following the Sept 16 One-Two-Go Airline crash.

The ''new aircraft, red plate'' campaign was planned before the Phuket crash that killed 89 people, noted Tassapon Bijleveld, the CEO of Thai AirAsia.

''The newness of the aircraft would certainly help to improve the image of low-cost carriers and of Thai AirAsia,'' he said yesterday.

The first of the 40 twin-jet planes ordered from the European planemaker Airbus will begin service on Oct 21, with the second one due in November and the third in December, said Mr Tassapon.

All 40 of the new A320s will be gradually added to the fleet over the next five years. The existing fleet of 14 ageing and fuel-thirsty Boeing 737-300s, each with 148 seats, will be retired over the next two years.

''It goes without saying that by using new aircraft, it implies greater safety and passengers can have better peace of mind,'' Mr Tassapon said.

Before the One-Two-Go crash, none of Thailand's three budget airlines - including Nok Airlines and Thai AirAsia - had been involved in a major accident.

However, Indonesia has had three accidents involving budget carriers, in which more than 120 people have died.

Meanwhile, Mr Tassapon said the load factor of Thai AirAsia remained high in the aftermath of the Phuket crash, which took place after a 24-year-old MD-82 jet skidded off a runway while landing in driving wind and rain.

''We are not losing any traffic, even on the Bangkok-Phuket sector, as passengers understand that accidents do happen,'' he said.

The airline's bookings over the next three months are still strong, he added.

I love the quote from the CEO of Thai Airasia above:

''It goes without saying that by using new aircraft, it implies greater safety and passengers can have better peace of mind,'' Mr Tassapon said.

Now if that isnt an admission that if you fly in crappy old planes you are more likely to die, I dont know what is.

It seems to me there is an unwaranted group think against budget airlines. I just flew in a crappy old 747 on Thai airlines, not a budget carrier by any stretch and was perfectly safe.

Yet noone is pointing fingers at the multitude of major carriers using an ageing fleet and screaming safety. China airlines just had a parked aircraft catch fire and explode with the pilots escaping with seconds to spare. Major airline though, pricey tickets = safety if you let the media, sponsored heavily by major airlines, teach you how to think.

Has anyone considered that budget airlines restrict your baggage weight because that's not the only cargo on the flight? Yes part of the costs of the flights are freight charges for the cargo that takes up the bulk of the storage space. That is how your tickets are so cheap. Also by utilizing 737s, the most widespread aircraft in the world I believe, parts are abundant and affordable. Experienced pilots are frankly abundant and affordable as well. Ryan Air draws a lot of revenue from advertising and the people who book at the last minute pay quite a high price.

Granted it looks like One-Two-Go tried to squeeze too much water from the sponge, but no airline regardless of its target market can afford to cancel flights. They all fly with less than fully operational aircraft. This is not necessarilly the same as unsafe, just less back ups to the back ups sometimes. If you think ANY airline will not fly with a less than mint condition aircraft, think again.

Has anyone considered why these fukers hassle you because your luggage is 2KG over-weight but the person behind you weighing some 50 kg more than you is OK because their luggage is 2 kg less???? WTF!!!

It's time for trhe obese to pay their way.

Mel.

I would agree there are decent budget airlines that are probably just as good as a decent full fare airline but there are also rubbish budget airlines..

And just how old and crappy was that 747 that you flew with Thai. The oldest 747 that Thai has in their fleet is 17 years old.

...And that is pretty well the oldest planes they have in their entire fleet. 1-2-Gos plane was 24 years old... and had done over 64,000 hours of flight time....

Well it's old enough that it has a main screen instead of individual LCD panels and no individual air flow controls, it was freakin' freezing. I must have been on that 17 year old job.

Mel - very amusing point, but don't give Ryan Air any ideas they WILL start adjusting fares based on your weight. As much as I appreciate cheap airfare, I think it's more appropriate to knock budget carriers for verifiable causes.

Case in point: I had a 10 kilo backpack as my only luggage and I wanted to carry it onboard my Air Asia flight. I used to get away with this as although it was over the 7.5 kilo limit for carry on it was under the 15 kilo checked bag limit and less than the combined 22.5 kilo limit.

Not anymore. The camera gear came out and the 7 kilo backpack was checked in. But still, IMO the cost of the ticket for a one hour flight being 2550 baht RT is worth it.

Took a quick look at that link and it looks like I was indeed on their oldest 747. First flight date in 1990 means it was built in the late 80s designed even earlier. It's definitely "no frills."

But you see what I mean...

The 1-2-Go MD-82 that crashed was delivered in 1983 and had been in storage at the boneyard Roswell for over a year before 1-2-Go got there hands on it. It had done over 64,000 flying hours, 34,000 flights, 24 million miles - equivalent to flying around the world over 1000 times.

Now that makes your Thai Airways plane look like a Virgin...

BC,

I have never been on a TG aircraft that had individual screens in coach with the exception of the A340-LR they fly between BKK and JFK.

Thinking about it none of UA's 747s have individual video screens in coach either (that is why I upgrade to Business when I fly them).

The safety of the aircraft is not in the interior. The interior of these aircraft can be modified in a day to upgrade seats or amenities (Take the 747 combis, they can be switched from full passenger to full cargo in a few hours). Age matters when considering the airframe and integrated flight system of the aircraft.

Amenities vary from airline to airline. If you want the best amenities fly SQ or CX and pay the premium for it.

Yes like that amenity of the nice ass enhancing Singapore Airlines air hostess dress. They also have a policy of retiring their fleet of air hotesses after 35 YO as opposed to the old battle axes in Thai Air. The higher class you go in Thai the older the staff; all the hotties are in coach. Thet seem to have it ass backwards.
