Report from Bangkok Post dated Thursday 15 November 2007 :- Thai AirAsia looks abroad to expand =========================== No-frills carrier Thai AirAsia (TAA) is running out of new domestic destinations to serve, prompting it to re-look its network-expansion strategy. The strategy calls for the airline to fly to more overseas destinations and to launch inter-provincial routes in the country, rather than through its Bangkok hub, as well as to raise frequencies on existing routes to absorb its rising capacity and support its growth plan. Ranong, the southwestern coastal province, will be the last domestic destination TAA will embark upon from Nov 23, three times a week. ''We don't have any more additional domestic cities that our jetliners can serve or cities which have sufficient traffic to justify the economics of flying to,'' TAA chief executive Tassapon Bijleveld told the Bangkok Post. Provinces with airports that can handle Airbus 320 or B737 aircraft such as Trang, Phitsanulok and Nakhon Ratchasima have proved not to provide enough traffic demand to support scheduled flights, he explained. The airline recently terminated its Bangkok-Khon Kaen and Bangkok-Nakhon Si Thammarat flights, in addition to Bangkok-Langkawi (Malaysia) where it could not fill enough seats. TAA now covers eight cities in Thailand and 10 destinations in neighbouring countries, with total weekly flights reaching 683. The airline earlier this week put its second brand new A320, capable of seating 180 passengers, into operation, thus increasing the number of aircraft in its fleet to 14, including 12 B737-300s. It is due to take delivery of the third A320 next month, and three more in February, July and August next year. The rest of the 40 A320s TAA has ordered from the European plane maker Airbus would be shipped over three years at a rate of six units a year. The limitation in expanding domestic services forces the airline to aggressively expand regionally. Next year overseas operations will account for about 60% of TAA's services, said Mr Tassapon. Plans are in the pipeline for it to launch a daily Bangkok-Jakarta flight next month and fly to five other Chinese cities, including Kuilin, Chengdu, Chongqing, as well as Hong Kong. The company already has routes to Macau, Xiamen and Shenzhen. TAA is also planning to start offering regular service to Kathmandu in the next 12-18 months.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Wednesday 9 April 2008 :- AirAsia to charge for checked bags ========================= The budget airline Thai AirAsia and its affiliated carriers in Malaysia and Indonesia will begin to impose handling fees for checked baggage to encourage passengers to travel light and cut fuel costs. TAA will be the first low-cost carrier in Thailand to start charging checked baggage handling fees for flights booked from April 21 on its entire network. A 30-baht fee is collected for each bag booked at least 24 hours prior to departure. The rate goes up to 50 baht at the airport check-in counters. Checked baggage will be charged on a per-piece basis up to a maximum combined weight of 15 kg. Anything that weighs more will be charged as excess in addition to the per-piece checked baggage handling fees. Similar fees imposed by sister carriers in Malaysia and Indonesia will take effect on the same date. But hand luggage carried into the cabin and weighing no more than 7.5 kg will not be charged. The airline allows a maximum of three bags for check-in. TAA chief executive Tassapon Bijleveld said the charges would help the airline keep its fuel surcharge, now 550 baht per sector, 100 baht lower than others, in the wake of skyrocketing jet fuel prices. But he said the airline could not ensure that its fuel surcharge would always be lower than on other airlines. The current difference will remain unchanged since jet fuel prices have soared above US$110 per barrel. While acknowledging criticisms from passengers who are forced to pay more, he insisted that they should be given the option to choose the services they require and pay only for those services. ''This approach has enabled AirAsia to provide continuous low fares, 15-20% lower than a full-service airline,'' he said. An aircraft carrying less weight burns less fuel. Fewer checked bags can also improve airport efficiency and will eventually lead to shorter check-in queues. Mr Tassapon said that about 80% of TAA passengers travelled with one checked bag. He hinted there would be other fees that TAA passengers could be facing in the future, but he did not elaborate.

You don't have to go early to the airport to get the 30 baht/bag rate, you just have to call them prior to the flight and "pre-book" the bag. Here is the link: http://www.airasia.com/site/th/en/page.jsp?reference=baggage Air Asia is what it is. You don't eat at McDonalds then complain that you didn't get a freshly ground sirloin burger with fresh onions and nice sliced tomatoes. And you don't choose an old, stretch marked TG out of Nana Parking lot at 4am for 500baht then complain you are grossed out when you open your eyes while f***ing her. So don't fly Air Asia and complain you have to buy water on board or that you can't check your steamer case without paying. Som num naa! They say on their website "Guests who travel light should not be subsidising others who require this service. This will lead to savings and help keep basic fares low for everyone. AirAsia's aim is to encourage guests to travel light and pay only for the service they require. I agree 100%. Now this whole thing just might be a way to gouge the customer, but at least they have spun it the right direction. Nok Air and Bangkok Air have higher bag allowance, and so does TG (even higher). There are other choices than Air Aisa, you pay different prices for different services. Everyone who reads this thread knows that Air Asia's flights tend to be delayed later in the day, they are very inflexible about late-checkins and they do not support connections to their own flights! So if one of these apply to you, book at your own risk.

I got no problem with the baggage charges – it’s the constantly be late that has caused me to no longer use them. I might not be able to bitch about not getting a freshly ground burger at McD’s but I sure as shit got a right to bitch about it taking three hours to get me the farkn’ burger in the first place. On the other hand if the old hag from the Nana car park can manage to keep my wood and string out the activity for three hours before I shoot my load - she might just get a tip. Assuming of course she is the one doing most of the work.
