Seems to me I've read on this board or another that some Asian countries won't let you in unless you have at least six months left on your passport - my Canadian passport expires in September, which could affect my planned trip in April. Anybody know anything about this?

You should have a passport that has 6 months validity after your departure. Not sure if this applies for Visa On Arrival. You'll have to renew your passport.

The same rule is true of USA passports as well bro. You need to renew your passport now while you still have time. Doesn't take long . Peace

The rule probably is valid for ALL passports of any nationality for EVERY entry.

Have entered Thailand now twice with an almost expired passport, without any problem. Due to the above I had my last 2 passports issued at the embassy in Bangkok. Again, no problems at entry at all. The official rule is 6 months validity at entering. I have worldwide dealt with immigration and customs clearances on a bigger scale and can say out of experience that many countries have this rule but I have never seen it enforced. But, better save than sorry, get a new passport before arrival and avoid any problems.

If the rule exists for the country you are holidaying in, you must follow the rules. Not because you cannot get in, but because you may enter in at a time when the rules are strictly enforced. Certain officials in certain countries may at times be flexible, but for the cost of a passport renewal, its not worth it to chance a turn back at the port of entry. Renew and travel in a relaxed mode. ps. if you travel a lot you can get (for a few bucks extra) a larger 48 paged Canadian passport for those 1 page visas, with entry exit chops that eat up the opposite page. Also for Canadians, you do not need to apply for a visa to LOS if you are staying less that 30 days. Don't let the travel agent set you up with a visa you don't need.

Renew and travel in a relaxed mode That has to be right, as with a lot of these things. Even if you know there's a 90%+ probability you'll get away with it, the small chance that you won't can still cause a lot of anxiety and it's just not worth it. If you have to renew your passport this year anyway, what do you lose by doing it sooner rather than later?

Just to explain my reasoning to arrive in Thailand within the said 6 months. This was not due to laziness before departing from my home country. I am used to be in my home country only 4/5 days a year and arrived often in Thailand after my working periods. Those arrivals were often not planneed in advance. When not returning to my home country for more than a year I was forced in arriving with limited time on my passport. (Since I have passports issued in Bangkok and also USA visa issued in Bangkok, I have more question asked when clearing immigration in the USA and several other countries) I am not advocating for anyone to arrive with limited validity of travel documents. As Arcadius stated: "Travek in relax mode!!"

Snow bird....you will not be able to renew your CDN pp, unless there are 6 months or less of validity left. so check your dates and make sure you give enough time to renew before you leave on you trip. eg. If your passport validity is 6 mons. or less on April 1, you can apply for a renewal, but if your trip begins on April 2, theres no time to accomplish the task, even if they said 'no problem' because it is, after all, the government. Price is only $85 for 24 pages or $90 for 48 pages. And of course those prices are in that wonderfully colourful, 'I Am Canadian' money! $85cdn. for stress removal is cheap, yes? ps. Get the 48 page one. They give you crayons and you can draw pictures in the extra pages. Freaks out immigration!
